Dr. Dorothy Deatherage

Dorothy Deatherage, Ed.D was born at Long Beach Seaside Hospital, the daughter of William Deatherage and Mildred Deatherage Johnson. She graduated from Wilson High School and returned there to teach physical education for three years.
She attended Mills College, UCLA, Stanford University and received her doctorate from USC. She became a member of the faculty at the fledgling Long Beach State College in 1955. While there, she saw it grow into the CSULB it is today. Among her many accomplishments, she co-published a book on sportsmanship, was instrumental in helping develop a competitive sports program for women and became Chair of the Women's Physical Education Department.
Dorothy was a devoted member of the First Congregational Church of Long Beach, Soroptimist International of Long Beach, Long Beach Junior League, Delta Gamma Alumni, P.E.O. and Recreation Park Women's Golf Club. Golf was her passion. Not only did she teach golf but she won the Long Beach Junior Golf Championship in 1946 and could be found on the course well into her 80's.
She will be remembered by family, many friends, colleagues and students for her commitment to her beliefs, generosity, loyalty to her profession and community, and her positive and outgoing personality.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her brother, Dale Deatherage, sister in law, Judy and niece, Marion "Mimi" Deatherage. She is survived by her niece, Kathy Deatherage of Snohomish, Washington and a nephew, Tom Deatherage.
A celebration of Dorothy's life will be held at 4:00 pm on Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at First Congregational Church of Long Beach, 241 Cedar Avenue. A reception at the church will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the First Congregational Church of Long Beach.
