James N. Jeffery Obituary
James (Jim) Nels Jeffery May 16, 1944 - July 22, 2018 James Jeffery passed away after a short bout with cancer. Born in Torrance, California, where his uncle was the attending physician, he it by was brought home to Long Beach, where he chose to spend his life. Jim attended Garfield Elementary, Stephens Jr. High and Polytechnic High School, graduating in 1962. He earned his Associates of Arts Degree at Long Beach City College, then continued at Long Beach State where he majored in business administration. Jim joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1965 and served in many capacities, from ambulance driver to Chiefs Aide, then he was honored to be promoted to Captain. After 22 years, he retired, but within a week he was placed with the state of California as an Assistant Chief of Emergency services. After 10 years with the state, he retired, again. Jim loved the fire service and actively promoted it, by becoming an advisor to the Long Beach Search and Rescue Explorer Post for 50 years. Many of the young explorers were motivated by Jim and went on to serve in various fire fighting and police capacities. Jim earned many awards, including Lifetime Eagle Scout, Silver Beaver and the Spurgeon award. He lived his life through Christ and was loving, generous and steadfast in his beliefs. He is survived by his brother, Jerry, sister in law, Cheryl; nephews and their spouses, David and Deborah, Jake and Rachel and niece, Brooke Rydstrom, great nieces and nephews, Deena Jeffery, Miles and Porter Rydstrom, Jeri and Bronson Jeffery and countless friends. Services will be held at 2:00pm on Friday, August 17 at California Heights Methodist Church, 3758 Orange Ave, Long Beach CA 90807. Please sign guestbook presstelegram.com/obits
