Mariamma Mathai Obituary
Mariamma Mathai Mariamma was born on May 3, 1934, the youngest of two children to Chandy Joseph and Aleyamma Chandy, in Kerala State, South India. On June 15, 1961, she married G.V. Mathai. They came to America and together with committed Christian friends from Washington State, co-founded India Evangelical Mission. Mrs. Mathai dedicated her life to serving alongside G.V., building support from churches and individuals across the U.S. for the needs in India: caring for the poor, ministering to children, and equipping Indian nationals with biblical training, to share the good news of Jesus Christ. For several decades, she collected donations of clothing and essentials, packing them in suitcases for India, meeting the needs of students, children and staff in the IEM Bible College and Children's Home. She loved hospitality, making delicious Indian meals and chai for the hundreds of guests that graced her home over the years. On September 29, 2018, Mariamma went home to be with the Lord, after an almost two year battle with cancer. In addition to her husband of 57 years, Mariamma is survived by her children: Helen Kumari Mathai, Mishal (Len) Montgomery, Dayan Mathai and Sheela (David) Kleinknecht; grandsons, Schuyler, Ethan and Luke Montgomery, and Samuel and Raymond Kleinknecht; her brother, A.C. Joseph and four nieces: Lizzy, Gracy, Jessy and Mercy and their respective families, and numerous beloved family members and friends. A memorial service will be held at 2pm on Saturday, October 13, at New Life Community Church, 18800 Norwalk Blvd., Artesia, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to India Evangelical Mission, P.O. Box 1633, Lakewood, CA 90716 www.indiaevangelical.org. Please sign the guestbook at presstelegram.com/obits
