Mary Frances Wachter Kiddie Obituary
Mary Frances Wachter Kiddie

January 25, 1925 – December 30, 2017

Mary Kiddie, of Long Beach, CA, passed away on December 30th just as the sun was setting, in her home surrounded by her four children.
Mary Frances Wachter was born in Los Angeles. One of her granddaughters described her as a smart, fierce, fun-loving, beautiful woman who entered a nursing program at the Los Angeles County Hospital immediately after graduating from high school in 1942.
She met her husband, Thomas Kiddie MD, during her training in the operating room. They were married on August 10th, 1946 and raised 4 children together.

She was active in the Junior League, the Assistance League and also volunteered for the Red Cross. She traveled extensively, visiting all seven continents. Most of her travels with her husband were related to fishing tournaments. She was an expert angler, much to the chagrin of many male anglers.

Her true passion was her family. She was devoted to her children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. During her 92 years, she instilled a love for music, commitment to the arts and many civic causes, and to the family. The house that she designed with architect Ed Killingsworth on the beach of the peninsula was the site for yearly family celebrations.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 48 years, Thomas Kiddie, MD. She is survived by her sister, Ellen Archibald of North Carolina, and her children, Tom Kiddie and Debbie McKay of Camarillo, CA; John and Letha Kiddie of Lompoc, CA; Katherine Cove of Rochester, NY; and Linda and Paul Benson of Arroyo Grande, CA.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Brookdale Hospice, which eased her and her family through the end of her journey or KKJZ 88.1, public supported jazz radio at Long Beach State University. There will be a celebration of her life at a later time. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obits.
