Robert Edward Donlan May 18, 1940 July 17, 2018 Robert Edward Donlan passed away peacefully in the company of his family on July 17, 2018. Bob was born in North Andover, Massachusetts on May 18, 1940 to Helen Katherine and Robert Edward Donlan, the older of two children. The Donlan family moved to Lancaster, California in 1956, where Bob attended Paraclete High School. Bob excelled in athletics, and received a scholarship to play basketball at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he graduated in 1963. Bob met his future wife, Leni Ludel, at UNR and they were married in 1965. Upon graduation, Bob began a long career in secondary education and athletics administration and coaching. After coaching basketball at UNR for a few years, Bob and Leni moved to Santa Rosa, California. Bob attended Sonoma State University where he obtained a masters degree and became the university's first athletics director and basketball coach. Bob and Leni's two older children, Allison and Robert, were born in Santa Rosa in 1967 and 1968. Soon after the family moved to Salt Lake City where the couple had their third child, Leigh, and where Bob obtained a doctorate degree from the University of Utah. In 1975 the family moved to Seal Beach, California, and Bob began a long career as a teacher and athletic director at Long Beach State University. After leaving LBSU, Bob worked in the athletic department at Chapman University before ending his career at the University of Southern California. Bob was a kind and generous man, who cared deeply about his family, friends and the thousands of student athletes that he assisted over his long career. Bob was preceded in death by his father, Robert, his mother, Helen, and his former wife, Leni. He is survived by his daughter, Allison and her husband, Adam; his daughter, Leigh; son, Robert Jr. and his wife, Angela. Bob also leaves behind five adoring grandchildren, Kelsea Zunino, Emma Zunino, Adam Zunino Jr., Katie Donlan and Charlie Donlan, and his sister, Mary. Bob was laid to rest in the presence of his family on July 27, 2018 at All Souls Cemetery in Long Beach. The family will celebrate Bob's life on Friday, August 17, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Church, 6180 E. Willow Street, Long Beach, CA 90815. A reception will follow at the Recreation Park Golf Course Club House, 5001 Deukmejian Drive, Long Beach, CA 90804. All who knew Bob and his family are invited to attend.
