Rubbie Lee Salter Obituary
Rubbie Lee Salter

Rubbie Lee Salter passed away with God in her heart January 28, 2013, at Veterans Affairs Hospital in Long Beach. A Long Beach resident, Mrs. Rubbie was born in Birmingham, Alabama on April 2, 1926. When Rubbie moved to Long Beach in 1971 she soon became the first African American woman to integrate Trinity Baptist Church located on 14th and Gaviota Streets. Along with her children, Mrs. Rubbie was not shy of the all white congregation and soon became a staple in the church and community. Affectionately known by most as Mother Salter, she prayed at the alter everyday until she was too sick to make her daily trips to church. Rubbie was preceded by her parents, Clara and Narvie Taite; stepmother, Mable Taite; her son, Jake Taite; and two grandchildren, Craig Tait and Teresa (Jackson) Bitter. Mrs. Rubbie Lee Salter leaves 14 out of 15 children to cherish her memories. Services will be held at Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church, Saturday, February 9, 2013, at 11a.m. Burial services will be held Monday, February 11th at the Riverside National Cemetery. Our mother, grandmother, friend and sister-in-Christ will be dearly missed. Please sign the guest book at www.presstelegram.com/obits.
