Wes Ellsworth Obituary
April 1, 1926 - December 31, 2018 Frank Wesley Ellsworth passed peacefully on December 31, having lived a very full life until the age of 92. Wes's family moved to Long Beach from Nebraska when he was two years old and he attended public schools here, including Woodrow Wilson High, before enlisting in the Army in 1942 at age 16. His underage enlistment was eventually discovered and he was honorably discharged from WWII service at age 17. He then joined the Merchant Marine and served on ships throughout the war years, continuing that career after the war, witnessing atomic bomb testing on Eniwetok Atoll in the 1950's, where he was a boat driver for scientists conducting those tests. Leaving the Merchant Marine for marriage, family and a career as a Long Beach Police Officer, Wes retired from his second career in 1984. Some of his post-retirement pastimes included taking up flying, motor home camping with fellow police retirees, known as the Cop Outs, and meeting every Friday for many years at Joe Josts for beer and Special sandwiches. He never completely stopped mourning the loss of Pabst Blue Ribbon beer at the Long Beach institution. Wes is survived by his wife of 63 years, Shirley, son Douglas Ellsworth (Carmen), daughter Pamela Hastings (Gary), grandsons Scott Mobley (Michelle), Joe Hastings and Austin Ellsworth, and granddaughters Arianna Carroll (Jim) and Victoria Vaughan. Great grandchildren are Alexia Kissee and Tyler Mobley. All share a common love and respect for Wes, who embraced life and was happiest surrounded by family and friends. Always humble, he requested no services. Family and friends will gather at a future date. Please sign the guestbook at presstelegram.com.
