Obituary Condolences

Katherine L. Miller January 24, 1925 - March 26, 2008 She was high-spirited, generous and hilariously funny, yet could be brutally blunt when the moment struck her. She was better known as "Katie" and held the distinction of having nine children - seven girls and two boys. She was the daughter of immigrants - her father, Pete, came through Ellis Island from Croatia in the early part of the century and ended up settling in Huntington Park where he met her mother, a Mexican national named Maria. Both spoke little English and as she and her sister, Leona grew up, they would have to help the two communicate in English. She met Jack Miller Jr. in her neighborhood Huntington Park and refused to become engaged until he returned from the war. He did and they married on September 7, 1946. They settled down on Aldrich Rd in South Gate, and, after having their first seven children, upgraded to more square footage in Lynwood in the early 1960's. Katie was a parishioner of St. Emydius Catholic Church for 52-years where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and Lector. She was a leader in Catholic Daughters for several decades and was one of the founders of the "Lynwood Golden Voices" singing ensemble. Her family wrote, "Her role of dedicated mother to nine children was of utmost importance to her, and her belief in God and family were unshakable. We will never forget Katie's humor, her laughter, her smile and her inimitable spirit." Katie was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Miller Jr.; her eighth child, Kristine Chase; and her second child, Judith Choquette. Katie is survived by seven living children, Janet Mayfield, Kenneth Miller, Karen La Bianca, Jacqueline Alnor, Keith Miller, Joni Finkle and Jenelle Smith. She was grandmother to eleven grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Mortuary services for Katie Miller will be held at Douglass Family Mortuary, 3363 E. Imperial Highway, Lynwood, CA on Tuesday, April 1 and viewing from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with rosary at 6 :30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be said for Katie on Wednesday, April 2nd at St.0 Emydius Catholic Church, 10900 California Ave., Lynwood, CA at 9:30 a.m.
