We mourn the loss of husband and father Alphonse Nagourney, 95, who died November 21, 2011 in Long Beach, California. A resident of Trumbull, Connecticut, he is survived by wife, Margaret; children, Brian Nagourney of Shanghai China, Sarah Nagourney of New York City, Dr Robert Nagourney of Long Beach, and grandchildren, Alexander, Adam and Natalie. Born in Brooklyn, New York, July 19, 1916, youngest of 6, his father was a prominent New York physician. With a degree from the Brooklyn College of Pharmacy, he pursued interests that included developing a line of women's perfume. A gifted entrepreneur, accomplishments include introduction of the topical germicide Betadine™, development of the Apgar-Score Timer in perinatology and the introduction of community-based cardiac resuscitation, as founder of Connecticut-based Resuscitation Laboratories. With business interests from Russia and China to Brazil, he spoke several languages including German and Spanish. Selfless, generous, energetic and creative he continued to pursue entrepreneurial business ideas well into his 80s. A voracious reader and entertaining raconteur, he always amused people with stories and witty anecdotes.
