John Thomas Rooney
Colonel USMC (Retired)

1917-2013

Col. John T. Rooney USMC (Ret.), 96, passed September 6, 2013 at Sunrise Sr. Living in Seal Beach, CA. Born June 10, 1917 in NE, they settled in Casper, WY. A USMC 2ndLt commission and USS Colorado assignment followed his 1939 Colorado State graduation. Receiving two Purple Hearts in two wars, Guam in WWII, and Hwachon Reservoir in Korea, he was also awarded the DSC for extraordinary heroism, second only to the MOH. He retired in 1965 and lived in Rossmoor, later working for LBUSD management. Happily married to Joy for 54 years, they were blessed with 4 sons, traveled extensively, and enjoyed weekly ballroom dancing. He loved his wife, kids, camping, hiking, and woodworking. His sons especially appreciated his wooden hand-made artisanal items. John was preceded in death by Joy and son John L. Surviving him are two sisters, Lucille and Margaret, three sons Thomas, Donn, and Greg, nine grandchildren and three great-grandsons. Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Life at Westminster Memorial Park, 14801 Beach Blvd, Westminster, CA 92683 on Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 2:30. Colonel Rooney will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors. Remembrances via Leukemia Society or Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund www.semperfifund.org. JT will always be a hero to us. We are very thankful that we were so blessed to know him. He leaves behind a wonderful family that will always make him proud. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the Rooney families. We are so sorry for your loss and sadness, but know that there is great JOY in Heaven.
