Irene Scholl Obituary

Irene Scholl, 83, passed away peacefully at her home in Silver City on Tuesday, March 5, 2013. She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years, John H. "Jiggs" Scholl; her son John R. Scholl, his wife Susan, and their boys, Nicolas and Griffin, all of Garland, Texas; daughter Lu Ann Wilmeth of Silver City and her son, Nathan and his wife Leah, of Las Cruces; son Steve Scholl and wife Chris, and their son Andy, and their daughter Stefanie, her husband Brett Thompson and their children, Ellen and Jacob, all of Albuquerque. Born on July 25, 1929, on her grandfather's farm near Point Pleasant, W.V., she was the first-born of four daughters born to Richard G. "Dick" Cobb and Opal Snodgrass Cobb. She is also survived by her younger sisters Ruby Prevost and Sandy Moore and her husband, Marshal, all of Silver City, as well as a number of nieces and nephews, "family member" Ida Lucero and countless friends. She was preceded in death by her son Brian, sister Patty Stephens and her parents. Mrs. Scholl was above all else, a good mother, helping raise her three sisters and raising her four children, as well as many of their friends. When her family moved to Silver City in 1945 to take advantage of the dry climate and its positive effects for her mother's tuberculosis, Irene Cobb went to work at the Ag Drug Store as a cashier. Her movie star good looks and winning smile caught the eye of a young Navy veteran who worked for the American News Company stocking the magazine racks. As it turned out, he had caught her eye as well. Within a year, Irene and Jiggs Scholl were married and began their family. They spent the next 67 years at the Scholl family home raising kids and a zoo of animals. The Scholl house, and especially Mrs. Scholl's kitchen, were always open and a center of activity and a place were friends and family gathered. Mrs. Scholl was a cook beyond compare. All who passed through the orange screen door on the back porch – at whatever hour – could count on a hot cup of coffee and something to eat on the stove. Her sense of style and creative decorating skills were legendary; as were her sharp wit and appreciation of irony. She was a member of Silver City Chapter #3 Order of the Eastern Star. She was a mentor and inspiration to generations of young women in Rainbow for Girls and young men in DeMolay. She and her husband were avid dancers, and were members of the Silver Squares square dancing club for many years, and later, were often found "cutting the rug" any place there were good friends and good music. For many years, back before callers could dial direct, Mrs. Scholl was the voice on the other end of the phone when Silver City dialed zero for the operator. She was later well known as Silver City's Avon Lady. For more than 32 years, she delivered orders to customers on every street and at most every business in town. She became a district manager and taught several new generations of Avon Ladies how to succeed and prosper. After work, Mr. and Mrs. Scholl were avid collectors of all things collectible. Their home is a living museum of Americana and she enjoyed telling all who entered not only what they were holding or seeing, but where it came from, how it worked, and why it was important or useful to those who owned it before. A recipient of a Daughters of the American Revolution award in high school, she instilled a love and knowledge of American history in her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother and homemaker for her family. At the end, she was comforted by her husband, her kids, her sisters and many close friends. Before her death, her care was entrusted to Gila Regional Medical Center's Hospice Unit, who provided kind and gentle support to Mrs. Scholl and her family in her final days. Funeral services will be held at Terrazas Funeral Chapel at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 9, 2013, with burial following at Memory Lane Cemetery. Arrangements are with Terrzas Funeral Chapels, "Trusted care for the ones you love." 575-537-0777. To send condolences, visit www.terrazasfuneralchapel.com.
