Kaiser S. Kunz, research professor emeritus in physics at New Mexico State University, died recently at the age of 98. Dr. Kunz was a 45-year resident of Las Cruces and moved to Albuquerque eight years ago to be close to loved ones. Dr. Kunz was born Oct. 16, 1915 in Bloomington, Ind. He and his 12 siblings all received bachelor's degrees from the University of Indiana, a feat noted by the Guinness Book of World Records. He received his masters and doctorate degrees in physics from the University of Cincinnati. Dr. Kunz was a lecturer at Harvard University in the 1940s, where he also taught radar to aviators during World War II. He met and married Ruth Horrigan, his wife of 62 years, in Boston in 1944. His professional career included work at Case Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio and Schlumberger in Connecticut. Dr. Kunz and family moved to Las Cruces, where he began his career at NMSU in 1960. He guided numerous graduate students to successful completion of graduate and post-graduate degrees. During his career, he authored two books and numerous professional papers. He and Ruth summered at Cape Cod for 50 years and traveled the world. After retirement, Dr. Kunz remained active professionally; consulting, teaching a class a semester at NMSU and pursuing his interest in mathematics. He became an artist, specializing in oil paintings of modern art. Dr. Kunz is preceded in death by wife Ruth and sons Karl and Peter. He is survived by his son Kevin and wife Barbara; granddaughter Colleen Herrera and husband Kris; grandson Kyle and wife Elizabeth; great grandsons Jacob Herrera and Koden Kunz, all of Albuquerque; grandson Michael Kunz and daughter-in-law Avis Kunz of State College, Pa.; daughter-in-law Gillian Harris-Kunz of Novato, Calif.; five siblings, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place and an event for family and friends is planned for February. Gifts may be made in memory of Dr. Kunz to the Peter Harris-Kunz Endowment Award for Poetry or the Ruth B.
