Martha Ann Russell Obituary
Martha Ann Russell

Born: 08/22/1932 Pecos, TX

Died: 01/25/2020 Hatch, NM

"Mamo," was what she liked to be called by her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and most of the kids at the school. When she was growing up in Texas, they called her "Marthann". Martha was an amazing daughter, sister, wife, mom, grandmother, and friend and made the best Red Chile Enchiladas.

Martha's story starts on August 22, 1932 in Pecos, TX when she started her journey with her parents Hubert & Elva Honaker and older brother, Bill. She grew up on the Honaker Farm & Ranch in Saragosa, TX. In 1950 she attended one semester at Baylor College and during a visit home from college she would meet the love of her life, Dyer Bailey Russell. Martha & Bailey had a whirlwind romance and were married on April 29, 1951. They spent the next ten years in Texas and New Mexico starting their family of 5 children. They moved the family to Hatch in 1965.

Martha was a stay at home mom until 1968 when she started working at The Hatch Valley Elementary School where she wore many hats, as a Teacher's Assistant, Supply Clerk, Secretary and Nurse Assistant. In 1997 she retired, knowing numerous children, parents and school staff. Martha loved her horses, dogs and cats; working in her yard; and fed all kinds of birds, especially hummingbirds. Most of all "Mamo" loved her grandchildren and spent lots of time keeping all of them. They will testify that time spent with "Mamo" was very special.

Loved ones that will miss Martha "Mamo" until they meet again are, two sons, Don Russell (Sherry) and Carroll Russell (Brenda); three daughters, Diana Vineyard (David), Debbie Kight (Doug) and Julie Alvarado (Pepe). Other survivors include fourteen grandchildren, Jeremy Russell, Cody Russell, Justin Russell, Dencil Russell, Jason Vineyard, Casey Russell, Amber Brockelsby, Aaron Vineyard, Megan Matthews, Ryan Russell, Jasmin Alvarado, Bailey Kight, Austin Alvarado and Trinity Alvarado; eight great-grandchildren, Kyler Russell, Bryce Russell, Kamra Russell, Orrin Russell, Hailey Russell, Landon Russell, Wesley Russell and Riley Russell as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Loved ones that were waiting in heaven for Martha include her parents, Hubert & Elva Honaker; her husband, Dyer Bailey Russell; and a brother, Bill Honaker and sister-in-law, Pat.

A Celebration of Life will begin at 10 AM Saturday, February 8, 2020 at The First Baptist Church, 421 N. Franklin Street in Hatch with Pastor Chris Walkins officiating. Inurnment of cremains will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery in Hatch.
