Born to Conrad and Amalia Schaefer and raised on a farm and Ft. Collins, Colorado. There she met Gordon while he was attending Colorado State University in May 1937. They were married in June 21, 9142. She moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1943 and began her journey as wife. Gordon attended college while ruth worked in a local factory. Gordon went to war and Ruth moved back to Ft. Collins and worked in a factory until Gordon returned in 1946. They returned to Lincoln, Nebraska where Gordon received his Masters and their son Duane Gail was born. They then moved to Las Cruces, NM in 1948. While Gordon worked at NMSU, Ruth had 3 more children, Dennis Daryl, Bernadine Fay and Renee Jean. Ruth was active in card groups and the Extension Wives Club. They joined the First Presbyterian Church in 1956 and she took care of Kindergarten children several years. She was also a deaconess in the church. Ruth and Gordon volunteered at the El Caldito Soup Kitchen and the Christian Day Nursery for many years. While their sons were in the military, she belonged to the Navy Mother's Club and made food and items for care packages for the service men. Ruth and Gordon loved to travel and were involved in the Dona Ana Peppers Travel Club and the Three Crosses Travel Club. After Gordon retired from the University, they traveled to different parts of the world but their favorite was pastime was to fish every chance they could. Ruth loved her family very much and was proud of her children.
Ruth was the youngest of 12 children. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband, 7 sisters and 5 brothers.
She is survived by 2 sons, Duane (wife Linda) and Dennis (wife JoVita), 2 daughters Bernadine and Renee (husband Jerry), 6 grandchildren, Duane Jr., Gordon, Gregory, Glenn Jr., Christine and Nicole, 10 great grandchildren, Thaddeus, Skyler, Evan, Alyssa, Ethan, Anna, Crystal, Jessica, Josiah, and Awstyn. She is also survived by nieces and nephews.
