Our dear beloved mother, Anastacia "Tacha" Barela Martinez, 95, of Hatch, entered eternal rest to be with our loving almighty Father on Saturday, May 3, 2014, at her home surrounded by her loving family. She was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Old Picacho Village to Augustin and Anita Lucero Barela; she was the youngest of twenty-one children. Tacha, as she was fondly known to family and friends, loved to sew, garden and care for her animals. She was also well-known for her famous "galletas." Tacha as a devout member of the Roman Catholic Church and prayed faithfully every day to the Virgin de Guadalupe. Those left to mourn her passing include three sons, Albert Martinez Jr. and wife, Estella, of Hatch, Lazaro Martinez and wife, Mary Helen, of Las Cruces and Alfredo Martinez and wife, Albertina, of Rancho Cucamonga, California; five daughters, Mary Alvarez of Monrovia, California, Monica Martinez of Walnut, California, Anastacia Vallejos and husband, Gilbert, Irene Diaz and husband, Ruben, all of Hatch, and Virginia Jimenez and husband, Hilario, of Las Cruces. Other survivors include 32 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and four great-great- grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Tacha was preceded in death by her loving husband, Alberto J. Martinez Sr., whom she married on March 30, 1940, two sons, Carlos and Ramon Martinez, a granddaughter, Katherine Martinez, three grandsons, Albert Martinez III, Hilario Jimenez III and Christopher Martinez, as well as all of her siblings. Visitation for Mrs. Martinez will begin at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, 2014, in Our Lord of Mercy Catholic Church, 611 West Hall, in Hatch, where the prayer vigil is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. The Mass of Resurrection will follow immediately thereafter. The rite of committal and interment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest next to her husband in the family plot. Serving as casket bearers will be Albert, Lazaro and Alfredo Martinez, Ruben Diaz, Gilbert Vallejos and Hilario Jimenez.
