Philip Vernon Collins, 83, passed away at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice on Feb. 19, 2013 following a long illness. He spent the last 11 months residing at Sagecrest Long Term Nursing and Rehabilitation Center where he received wonderful nursing care from Sagecrest as well as Hospice. Philip was born on a ranch in Rio Arriba County on Nov. 21, 1929 to Elbert M. and Earle A. Collins. He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Della; one sister, Elena and husband Joe Bost; four daughters, Marlene and husband James Aubert, Jeannie McFerrin, Phyllis Savery, Terry and husband David Bierwirth. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews. Philip was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Brown and his brother, Alexander Collins. Philip received his military retirement in 1989 after serving in the U.S. Air Force and Army as well as the National Guard. His great interest has been in serving as a member of the Daylight and Aztec Masonic Lodges and the Scottish Rite. He was also very interested in aircraft, obtaining a collection of airplanes and visiting many air museums throughout the country. Philip loved to travel. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at 11 a.m. at the University United Methodist Church, 2000 Locust with Randall Partin officiating. There will also be a Masonic service. A graveside service will follow at Masonic Cemetery. Philip was very interested in the "National Museum of Nuclear Science and History" in Albuquerque.
