Lila Bridgers Obituary
Lila Bridgers, 86, passed into the arms of her Lord, Jesus, at La Posada Mesilla Valley Hospice on Thursday, March 14, 2013. Lila was born in Torrance, California, on September 7, 1926, to Forrest and Lima Adkisson. She spent much of her time growing up riding horses and ice skating with her older brother, David. She earned a degree and a teaching certificate from UCLA in 1954, where she met her husband, Richard. They were married on September 1, 1956 and moved to Lynwood, California, where she raised her 4 children. Lila was a much focused mother. She was very active in her children's activities, and would frequently host their friends for pool parties and tacos on a Saturday evening. She lived in Lynwood until 1975, and was an active member of St. John's Presbyterian Church, teaching women's Bible studies and mentoring younger women. Lila moved her family to Garden Grove, California in 1975 and was a sponsor for the Garden Grove First Baptist Church youth group. Her home was open to young people of every age. She also was a founding member of the Orange County Quilters Guild, and her quilts are in the homes of each of her kids today. Lila maintained a California Teaching Credential from her teaching days at Hillside School in Torrance, California, from 1954-1957, and was involved in teaching in a home school co-op throughout most of the 1980's. Lila moved to Las Cruces, New Mexico, in 2000, and has been a member of Calvary Baptist Church since then. Lila has loved the Lord and wanted to serve Him throughout her life, and has impacted the lives of many younger women and men. She has actively mentored and invested in the lives of younger women. Lila loved the women she met with and mentored and she truly considered them an extension of her family. She was a member of the Las Colcheras Quilt Guild and she continued to quilt and knit to the very end of her life. She loved well and was well loved by her family, her church and many who came to know her during the last months of her life at La Posada. She is survived by her brother, David Adkisson and his wife Beverly; her sister Eva Kirby; her son Steve Willems and his wife JoAnn and their children Aaron, and Danielle Willems and her husband Ezio Blasepti; her son Paul Bridgers and his wife Lindy and their sons David, Michael and Cody; her daughter Lori Alexander and her husband Patrick; and her son Christopher Bridgers. Lila was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Richard, who died in 1996. A memorial service will be held at Calvary Baptist Church, 1800 S. Locust Street in Las Cruces, on Tuesday the 19th of March, 2013 at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to Mesilla Valley Hospice, 299 Montana Ave., Las Cruces, NM, 88005.
