Gail Shiner Obituary
Gail E. Shiner
Gail E. Shiner, 77, died Sunday, July 10, 2016 at her residence. She was the wife of Daniel T. Shiner, who died August 17, 1995.
Born in Lebanon on November 3, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Clarence H. and Hazel (Holden) Shay.
A 1956 graduate of Lebanon High School, Gail earned a bachelor's degree at Penn State University where she also did her post graduate work. She was a Language Arts teacher in the Tulpehocken School District, retiring in 1999.
Gail served as the President of the Board of Trustees at the Myerstown Library and had been a member of the board for over twenty years. She was a longtime member of the Woman's Club of Myerstown, serving in various capacities, including president. She had been chairman of the annual card party to benefit the Myerstown Library. In the Music and Drama Division, she wrote the dialogue for show performances and acted as emcee. These shows are presented at nursing homes, senior citizen groups and church and civic groups. The money earned was used to provide scholarships for ELCO seniors. She also served as the president of the Lebanon County Federation of Women's Clubs.
In her church, Mary, Gate of Heaven, she served as the Legislation Chairman at both the local and diocesan level of the Council of Catholic Women. Chairman of the apple dumpling booth, working at the summer festival for over 20 years. As a member of the kitchen committee, she had been active in the various events held at the church. A former member of the Lay Council, she served the church as an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.
Because she felt Myerstown had been a wonderful place in which to raise her family, she volunteered for some local activities to give back to the community. Since its inception in 1994, Gail had been a member of the ELCO Hall of Fame Committee, responsible for planning the banquet to honor the selectees. She served as secretary for the Jackson Township Redevelopment Authority, was a volunteer presenter at the Isaac Meier Homestead for the elementary education program, and also participated on the membership committee.
As a member of the Daffodil Committee of the American Cancer Society, she was responsible for two day sites, one in Myerstown and one in Lebanon. She was also a volunteer for the "Conquer Cancer with a Quarter" Campaign. In the "Go Red for Women" program, she was a member of the planning committee for the American Heart Association. She also served on the Family Living Board of the Penn State Cooperative Extension.
Because education was an important part of her life, she volunteered at Cornwall Elementary School in the classroom of her daughter, Lisa. She was a member of the Western Berks Country Retired Teachers where she served as vice president. She was also a member of the Berks County Association of Retired Teachers and was named the Volunteer of the year in 2004.
Reading was a favorite pastime, although she also liked crafts and sewing. Gail was a participant in the Women's Pool League at Arbor Gate, much to the surprise of her family. However, her truly favorite thing to do was to spend time with her very special children and her "perfect" grandchildren. They were the most important part of her life.
She is survived by daughters, Lisa, wife of Stephen Jannetta of Lancaster, Beth Ann Veres, wife of Dan of Pittsburgh; sons, Daniel T. Jr., husband of Melissa Shiner of Lebanon, Damian Shiner, husband of Emma Barton of Boston MA; 13 grandchildren; a niece, Barbara Martin; and a nephew, William Shay. She was preceded in death by a brother, William Shay.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, July 15, 2016 at 12 p.m. at Mary Gate of Heaven Catholic Church, 188 W. McKinley Ave., Myerstown, with a visitation beginning at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery, Lebanon.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Myerstown Community Library, 199 N. College Street, Myerstown, PA 17067.
