Lawrence R. Phillips Obituary
Lawrence R. Phillips

Mt. Gretna - Lawrence R. Phillips, 78, passed away quietly at his summer home in Mt. Gretna, Pa. June 29, 2018. The son of the late Frank R. and Christine Phillips of Bedford, Pa., he retired from Citigroup, Inc. as senior vice-president of human resources and had previously served in senior HR positions at General Electric and Johns Hopkins medical institutions as well as in similar positions elsewhere during a career that spanned several decades. Although he could point to a lifetime of business accomplishments, the achievements of which he was most proud were reflected in his family. He also enjoyed many warm and enduring personal relationships with friends throughout the country, and he was an enthusiastic supporter of the arts. In Mt. Gretna, he helped establish a community trust supporting artistic groups that make the historic Mt. Gretna Playhouse their principal summertime performance venue. A 1957 graduate of Beaverdale-Wilmore H.S. in western Pennsylvania, he received from Lehigh University his B.S. in Business Administration in 1962 and an M. S. in Economics in 1964. In addition to his beloved wife Julia, he is survived by a son, Lawrence M. Phillips of Texas; and by daughters LeighAnn Phillips (wife of Robert Mandich) of Hawaii, and Magdalena L. Phillips and her four-year-old daughter Naomi of Florida. Also surviving are stepsons Dr. Rudolph Lurz, Ed.D. and his wife, Dr. Rebecca Kirchner, M.D., of Illinois; and Erik Lurz and his wife Karen Chang of California. Additional survivors include his sister, Donna Jean Phillips of Alexandria, Va., and his stepmother, Jeanne Ritchey Phillips of Bedford and her children. He left a beautiful legacy of kindness, love and compassion. Lawrence will be greatly missed. A blessing service for Lawrence will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the VAIA FUNERAL HOME INC., 463 ATHENA DRIVE, DELMONT, 463 Athena Drive, Delmont, (724) 468-1177, officiated by Father Efren Ambre of St. John Baptist de la Salle Catholic Church, Delmont. Everyone is requested to please arrive at the funeral home by 10:30 a.m. Graveside committal services and interment will follow in Twin Valley Memorial Park, Delmont.
