Guy Lafond, aged 59, passed away peacefully on Friday, April 26, 2013 in Regina Saskatchewan. He leaves to mourn his beloved wife of 32 years Enid Oddleifson, his son Éric (Jessica Parker), and daughter Gaétane. He will be missed by his brothers Raymond (Madeleine Gagné), René (Monique Papineau), and sisters Evelyne, Pauline (Sheldon Bouchard) and Marielle (Paul Prenovault), his mother-in-law Vordis Oddleifson, sisters-in-law Karen Foster, Kathy Finnson, and brother-in-law Kevin Oddleifson. He also leaves numerous nephews and nieces who adored their "uncle and monocle Guy." He is predeceased by his father Olivier, mother Denise (Bérard), father-in-law Einar Oddleifson and brother-in-law Grant Finnson. Guy loved people. Nothing was more important to him than to connect with family and friends whom he would visit on his many travels. He also established strong friendships with many of the people of Indian Head and surrounding areas where he has lived and worked for 30 years. Guy was an academic at heart. With a Masters from the U of M and a PhD from the University of Saskatchewan, he shared his research and knowledge in agriculture all over the world. He was an active member of many associations dedicated to the advancement of agriculture. He had a passion for the better management of soil, plant, and water resources for future generations and the growing world population. Keeping abreast of innovations initiated by farmers, Guy would often be seen with them in a field or on a combine in the evening and on weekends. He loved the farmers and the farmers loved and respected him. Guy was a visionary. He was instrumental in establishing the Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation (IHARF). Farmers of Western Canada have credited Dr. Guy Lafond for changing the way they manage their land by embracing the zero till concept. Many profited from his expertise and tireless unbiased research which he eagerly shared all over the world including USA, China, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Australia and many European countries. Family and friends ache with much pain in the earthly loss of Guy, but are comforted by Guy's strong spirit, love and energy that is with us forever. A Celebration of Life will be held at the Indian Head Memorial Hall, 423 Grand Avenue, Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Indian Head Agricultural Research Foundation (IHARF), Box 156 Indian Head SK, S0G 2K0, in Guy's memory. Passing of a no-till hero!
Greetings Canadian friends (originally sent 28th April 2013),

It is with great sadness that I acknowledge the passing of one of our globes champions in sustainable agriculture. I wish I could be in Indian Head to celebrate a rich agricultural life of one of the best. Guy was stubborn for scientific data and loved to understand why the system worked as it did. I have been honored to have known Guy and am thankful for his tireless efforts in understanding no-till agronomy and for sharing his knowledge with several groups of Australian farmers that I have bought to Indian Head.

An email from a friend of mine early in 2013 sums up how i feel about Guy's work "Hi Bill, I have finally got around to doing my PhD thesis corrections and just wanted to thank you for sourcing the Guy Lafond papers on row spacing and seeding rate interactions. They are some of the best I've come across and have been very helpful in addressing some of the corrections."

I mourn the loss of one of Canada's best no-till agronomists.

Guy was a wonderful person that I knew well during University at the U of M living in Tache Hall. I ran Guy a few times after that as we both worked in Agriculture and he was always ready for a good chat about what we were each doing. Although I didn't see him often in the last 35 years, I will miss him.

Whilst reading a new and substantial book on Conservation Agriculture, to which Guy contributed, I observed with great sadness his passing.
Guy visited us here in England as a guest speaker of the UK Soil Management Initiative, of which I was Chairman at the time. I remember him being inspirational, and as a result every Annual meeting subsequently we invited an international speaker. However, he was never bettered. The world will miss his talent.

Guy was directly responsible for much scientific information on dryland cropping systems. He was a believer in crop rotations and other sustainable practices. To the Lafond family. In 2006 the SSCA came up with the idea to publish a journal. Guy volunteered to steer the project, an offer the rest of the Board
was grateful (and relieved) for. Prairie Soils and Crops eJournal was launched with Guy and Neil Harker as editors. Guy's freely gave of his time
and expertise while serving on the Board. It was a privledge to serve on the Board with Guy. I will not forget his gentle reminders "Be sure to mention the Journal in SSCA communications".

My husband and I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Lafond while visitng Canada on my husband's Nuffield Scholarship study trip. We learned he was a very giving & well respected man and was very generous to take the time to talk with us. So saddened to hear of his passing. Roger and I were so sorry to hear about Guy's illness and passing. When I think of Guy I remember back to the joys of physiology class when a group of us would sit together and of course seeing him on subsequent occasions at ag conferences where he always had a smile to share and an update on your family. My deeply condolences to Enid and family. I met Guy 2005 in Indian Head the first time. Coming over from Germany the STEP organized a meeting with him, the person that has so much knowledge about dryland farming. Guy surprised me with his experience, but furthermore with his openness. After that we saw each other several times in Europe and in Canada. Talking with him about the agricultural business gave so much inspiration to me. I will never forget the journey with him and his brother Raymond to Siberia. Guy we are missing you and wish your family strength in this difficult time.

To the Lafond Family

I have been thinking a lot about Guy since I heard of his passing. From the Eighties to the last time we spoke on the telephone a few weeks ago I respected his intellect and appreciated his friendship. Guy had the heart of a farmer as well as being a visionary scientist. Although it is very sad that Guy died before his time he must have been gratified in his last months to see the fruits of his life work every time he drove through the country. Guy played an instrumental role in promoting soil stewardship that helped transform agriculture in Western Canada. Guy must have felt content with his contribution to farming. Guy Lafond was indeed one of "God's true Gentlemen". I was privileged to have been associated with him and will miss him greatly.

Friends since 1971, when he drove my farm truck at harvest, and then continued to work with me during the farming seasons through 1978. Over the years we shared a profound passion for all things "agricultural".

My deepest sympathy to the Lafond Family. I had the privilege to know Guy as a agricultural reporter, and Guy never once said no to my persistent questioning. He was passionate about agriculture and helping farmers sustainably feed the world. My interviews and visits with Guy were always a two way conversation, with Guy wanting to know as much about what was happening in other areas of agriculture as it was about his research. His passing is a great loss for all of us.

I had only spoken with Guy on a couple of occasions and was somewhat surprised that he actually remembered who I was and where I was from and what we had spoken about previously even though it had been a couple of years. Just this morning I used some of his winter wheat research at a Winter Wheat Survival Clinic. My condolences to the family, he will be missed.

We cannot believe that HTE has lost a great friend and this gap can never be filled. Guy and you have been great leaders in the HTE family. We have always and greatly appreciated the time we have been working together and the contributions that you both have made. As a team, you have helped us a lot with our meetings and galas. I remember when Guy did the ‘Master of Ceremony' in our gala on January, 22nd 2011 in Regina. His good sense of humour added to everything on that day that made the event a real success. We still rejoice the good memories of this event which had the theme ‘Beach Party' and will cherish this throughout.

Palmers from the beach are mourning with you. We are all at a loss for words to express our sorrow for Guy's passing. He was such a good, kind friend. Ron enjoyed working with him on research projects for nearly 30 years. They didn't always sing from the same songbook, but had real respect for each other. That man could MOVE -always on a mission- things to do-places to go- people to meet- food to savor eagerly- wine & fellowship to enjoy! He helped us sandbag the outhouse in the 2011 flood - ever the guy to help others. He always teased us about living in paradise at Katepwa Lake. We have all learned so much from Guy. He will be sorrowfully missed by all who were fortunate enough to call him friend.

I have been informed about this sad news. It is unbelievable and very sorrowly. He was available any time when I was needed something and shared with me any information. I am still feel this keenly. GUY has visited Kazakhstan twice and many scientists and farmers know him well . I know he was very demandable and popular among Canadian farmers. Dear Family

I was privileged to work with Guy since about 1998. We worked on numerous projects and he was always passionate and excited about his work. We had projects on flax management, winter wheat, fertilizer management using the green seeker and a bunch of other projects. He often took leadership in projects such as getting new openers donated for all of the conservapak plot seeders in western Canada. He was a major player in a project I was involved in as principle investigator on energy and water effeciencies. He was always a positive contributor to new projects and new ideas. I will miss being able to phone him up to share his new insights in cropping systems.

I knew Guy only a short while in person but through Enid, his loving and cherished wife, I felt we were good friends before I met him in Mexico. We enjoyed hearty laughs and stories. Guy loved to smile and was a caring listener and so modest about the impact of his momentous work. A man of science and of great compassion. I am glad that your passing was peaceful, Guy. I will remember our brief time together with fondness. Thank you for teaching me to cherish small moments with people and not to take them for granted.

I was fortunate to have been a summer student working for Guy in 1982 and 1983 at the Crop Development Center in Saskatoon where he was a PhD student. He was one of those rare people who was intelligent, practical and had a great sense of humor. I certainly learned a lot from him. My daughter, Kim, had the same great opportunity a couple of years ago at the Indian Head Research Station. Enid and family, we are so sorry for your loss.

To all the Lafond family and friends that Guy left behind: Guy was a truly inspiring man. I will never forget the sayings he shared with me in 1979 when we were discussing his love and passion for education and research. I still use 'his' sayings on a regular basis. Guy said, "The More Your Know, The More You Know How Little You Know." Profound and true words. He also said, "A Smart Man Learns From His Mistakes. Guy was a superb scientist, and a great friend and colleague. His innovative ideas on improving our research equipment has made life a lot easier for many of his research colleagues including myself. My condolences to my cousin Guy's wife,children,brothers,sisters and extended family members.
So many good memories with you on the farm during the summers in St Jean,Manitoba when we were just kids. From climbing haystacks in the field behind the house,running around in and out of the barn, cycling to the gravel pits for a swim and going to all the other farms to visit your friends.
We never did tell your mom and dad how we almost burnt the pickup truck down in the field while lighting the stubble on fire. ( We were too lazy to walk so ""you"" took the truck and made me promise not to say anything)
I also never did get you back for turning on the power while I was climbing over the electric fence by the barn.

A memory that I have is of visiting Enid and Guy in Indian Head some years back and listening to Guy talk about a project. The topic happened to be home building. I remember he him taking time to show me a design program on the computer. We often hear the expression "a gentleman and a scholar". Guy personified this to the fullest. Great person and equally a great scientist, gentle but firm in his convictions.
