John GIANOULIS Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post from Jun. 30 to Jul. 1, 2017.
JOHN GIANOULIS
John, late of Regina, SK, passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the age of 91 years. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Eva; parents Lambros and Maria; sisters Ioana and Anastasia; and brother Stavros. John is survived by his two daughters Mary and Helen; sons- in-law Paul and Doug; grandchildren Eva and Andraya, Robert and Erin; sister Eleni; as well as loving extended family and many friends. John was a loving, kind, intelligent, thoughtful, generous, witty and gregarious man who touched many lives. He was born in Eleochori, Greece, in 1926, and came to Canada as a young man, seeking a better life. After time spent in Calgary, he met and married his beloved Eva and together they continued their journey in Prince George, Moose Jaw, Banff and Edmonton, ultimately settling in Regina in 1965, which he happily called home for the rest of his life. John came to Regina to become a co-owner of the Golden Plaza Restaurant. He loved welcoming people, always with a big smile, and quickly became a familiar face to so many. He connected with his customers, showing genuine interest in their lives. He cherished the resulting friendships and the nicknames he collected, including Big Bad John, Tiger, and even You Old Banana Peel. He was a committed member of the Greek Community, volunteering at the church, helping out at Mosaic, and was heavily involved with the Ahepa family. After retiring in 1988 he faithfully and lovingly looked after his wife Eva until her untimely passing in 1990. He then became a dedicated volunteer at the Wascana Rehabilitation Centre and the Allan Blair Cancer Centre for many years. John had a strong moral and ethical code which he passed on to his children and grandchildren. He highly valued education. He was an incredibly supportive and loving husband, father, and grandfather and will be greatly missed. Prayers will be held at St Paul's Greek Orthodox Church, 3000 Argyle Road, Regina, SK on Sunday, July 2, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Service will be held at St Paul's Greek Orthodox Church on Monday, July 3, 2017 at 10:30 am. In Fr Spyridon Vandoros' absence, Frs Cristian Frunzulica and John Kaoukakis presiding. Interment in Riverside Memorial Park. Deepest sympathy to all John's family.. Your dad volunteered for me at Wascana Vets unit. We all loved him there, and he was so good with the veterans there. What a joy to have around. He will be missed.

To the Gianoulis family.

May I offer my deepest sympathy to you on John's recent passing. I first met John. whom I called the Golden Greek, during his nights and days operating the Golden Plaza Restaurant.

John was as advertised - a very kind, thoughtful and funny man - who loved life, in particular serving his many loyal customers who became his friends.

I know that you will miss him greatly.

To The Gianoulis Family: I had the pleasure of volunteering with John at the Allan Blair on Friday mornings. John was so kind, caring and thoughtful. His greatest joy was serving the patients with coffee/tea and chatting with them. At coffee time for us he would go down to the cafeteria and get us our coffee and a piece of toast and we would sit at our volunteer desk and enjoy our coffee time together. He worked with me and another woman and called us Your Highest and Your Majesty. I often brought him jokes to read or would tell him one I heard and he had such a wonderful sense of humor and a joyful laugh. He will be missed but will be with his beloved wife who he missed deeply. He was a very family oriented person who talked often about his children and grandchildren. Rest in Peace Dear John.

I remember John fondly during my summer work term in Regina many, many years ago... He was always so kind and welcoming at the restaurant. It was like home away from home. May his memory be eternal!

Nouno was a one of a kind man. He was genorous with his advice, interested in my future and always there for a chuckle or a talk. He always spoke from the heart. I will miss him, but take comfort in knowing that he is free and with Nouna. He has left behind 2 beautiful daughters, son in laws and wonderful Grandchildren to carry on his legacy. May he rest in peace.

Dear Maria, Hellen and families

It was with great sadness that we heard of your father John's recent death.
John was a wonderful human being, husband, and father. I remember many fond discussions with him and my father, often joined by many others. His wisdom and humanity was truly an inspiration for me.
Our hearts and thoughts are with you during this time of grieving. May his memory be eternal.
