LYLE BENKO
March 28, 1950 – February 26, 2016
It is with heavy hearts that we announce that Lyle passed away peacefully on February 26, 2016 from complications that arose after heart surgery. He was predeceased by parents Nick and Kay, and his brother Ken. Lyle is survived by Donna, his loving wife and best friend of 43 years; his son Dean (Kirsten), his beloved grandchildren Emma and Andrew; his daughter Paula (Warren) Weber; numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Lyle served as a teacher, administrator, and consultant in the Regina Catholic School Division for over 30 years. Following that, Lyle shared his talents at the University of Regina as a teacher in the Faculty of Education. Lyle also served as president of L*A*M*B* Consulting Inc., working internationally, nationally and provincially with Education for Sustainable Development and Climate Change. Lyle was also the Co-coordinator of the Regional Center of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development (RCE Saskatchewan). Most importantly, Lyle was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. We are extremely grateful for the outpouring of support we have received from family, friends, colleagues, and all whose lives were touched by Lyle. The family wishes to express their appreciation for the excellent care provided by the OR, ICU, and other medical staff of the Pasqua Hospital and the Regina General Hospital. As well, we are deeply grateful for the support of the chaplains and all those who provided spiritual care. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Resurrection Parish, 3155 Windsor Park Road, Regina, SK, on Saturday, March 5, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. John Weckend officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Lyle may be made to RCE Saskatchewan. Make cheques payable to Luther College and send c/o Dr. Roger Petry, Co-coordinator RCE SK, Luther College, University of Regina, 3737 Wascana Parkway, Regina, SK, S4S 0A2. Dear Donna, As a co-founder of RCE SK, I witnessed Lyle's hard work, persistence, kindness and generosity. Lyle was so encouraging of others - when I had a research milestone in December, he took note and sent words of congratulations - such a thoughtful person! His presence will be sorely missed as colleague, teacher and beautiful human being. Our deepest empathy to you and your family. Sincerely, Tanya Dahms and Douglas Casimel

Dear Donna, we share your sadness. Lyle was a wonderful human, generous and warm and genuine. He was a tremendous help to us in Portland, Oregon as we began our RCE journey, and it was an honor and delight to host you and him at our opening party. We are forever grateful for his global contributions to ESD, and we will miss him. Our deepest condolence on the passing of your wonderful husband.

I'm very sorry to hear of Mr. Benko's passing. He was a frequent participant in FCM webinars, for which I serve as registrar. He provided relevant feedback (webinar evaluations) to help us improve our webinar services, and and also shared information with other participants during the webinars. He and I emailed many times over the past 8 years. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. I will light a candle at Mass this weekend in his memory. I was very saddened to hear of the passing of Lyle. I got to know Lyle through the family of Regina Catholic Schools, also on the curling ice in the Teachers' Curling League on Fridays. One of Lyle's favorite quotes that has meaning for me is from Baba Dioum (a Senegalese Poet) who wrote: In the end, we conserve what we love. We love only what we understand. We will understand only what we are taught. Lyle was a great teacher and mentor for many. He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered...

Donna and Family,
I was fortunate to work with Lyle for many years through his volunteer work with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Saskatchewan. Lyle gave freely of his time and talents for our committees addressing the precious environment and education of our precious children. His unending energy to connect and network people made him the common denominator in so many good works. I will miss his smiling face and all the times we would exchange photos of family and what everyone was up to. Donna, may your memories aid in this time of loss.

I worked with Lyle in the science department at Miller in the late 90's. Lyle was a great teacher, mentor and friend. His energy and enthusiasm were infectious. Working beside him made me want to be a better teacher and a better person. What a gift! Thank you Lyle, your legacy will live on through the better teachers you inspired.

Dean,
I am so sorry for your loss. I often think back, with a smile, of getting to know your dad preparing for your wedding, and a conversation I had with him the day after. He said (with a huge smile), "Now wasn't that a Party!" My thoughts are with you and your family.

Brian and I were "contemporaries" of Lyle as we worked and "played" our way through classes and field trips in Biology Ed. and Science Ed. at the U of R. All of us in that special group were idealistic and eager to save the planet through environmental education. Lyle was the one who came closest to those goals. But when he communicated with me these last two years, it was frequently with pictures of Donna and his grandkids...his greatest sources of pride and his legacy. He was a great source of understanding and thoughtfulness. I am so grateful. God grant this planet more Lyles. And God grant Donna and family the peace, strength and hope to go forward. With love, Lynne Selinger

Dear Donna and Family,
On behalf of members of RCE Tongyeong, Korea, I would like to extend our sincere condolences. The warmth of cinammon buns in your kitchen still lingers in my heart. Lyle's passion and dedication for education for sustainable development reached far and touched many around the world, including here in Korea. He was a natural facilitator, connector and speaker, and people became facinated with the sparkle in his eyes when he talked of the dream of a better future for our children.
We miss him very much.
With prayers and hugs,

I have such fond memories of attending St. Patrick's School; the class of 1982. I recall feeling awkward, not knowing what talents I had. As a 12/13 year old, you want so much to somehow shine inside but feel lost.

Mr. Benko reached out to me in school and he got me involved in the SRC, planning school social events, volunteering for the United Way and Red Cross. I found self-confidence and found these are talents that I use and I have stayed active with as an adult
He was also my Charlie for my Charlie's Angels club that ran from grade 5 to 7. He wrote in my year book that I should never lose that special connection I make with people and how I make others feel good inside. I know he probably signed many yearbooks but that really opened up my spirit.

It was really the way he treated us every day that made us feel good inside and he connected our class to really care about each other and how we treat one another. He and Mr. Cozine were the Dynamic Duo at our school and they helped shape me to be a little shinier than who I was 34 years ago.

Those happy days have stayed in my heart and I want to thank you for the positive and caring impact you had on me. My only regret is I didn't tell you sooner, but I felt it.

Much love to your family and may you be at peace.

Luv, Laurie Mignon

Well there are ordinary people and then there are extraordinary people like Lyle. With a big smile and firm handshake he was always engaging and I always smiled when I saw his name on my daily appointment sheet. I will miss out debates on absolutely anything and also his wisdom to me for a happy marriage. I shall cherish the bottle of wine he bought me to congratulate me on my 25th wedding anniversary and you know what ... I'm never going to open it! God speed Lyle and thank you for making me a better person. Dr. Nick Perry.

Dear Donna and Family, I extend to you my condolences in the loss of Lyle. I knew him since he was a little boy living on Queen Street. I also knew him as a parishioner of Sacred Heart Church and a teaching colleague with Regina Catholic Schools. He was always passionate about educating others. It is people like him who have worked very hard to make our world a better place. Thank you, Lyle for teaching and leading others to assist with sustaining our world. What I always enjoyed was how humorously Lyle moved in our world. There was never a time that I saw him that he did not have a funny joke or story to tell. He will be greatly missed but has left us all with many fond memories. Unfortunately I will not be at his funeral but I assure you that my thoughts and prayers will be there with you. May Lyle rest in peace for a short life well lived. He will be fondly remembered.

I had the great privilege and honor of serving with Lyle on the Board of the Calgary-based SEEDS Foundation (later SEEDS Connections) and I know I speak for all of my colleagues in saying that Lyle was, in many ways, the foundation and the conscience underlying our work. He always had wise and friendly comments, took photos which he happily shared, and was extremely passionate about the causes he embraced so heartily.

We are so sad to realize that we will no longer hear his cheerful voice, (and outright Saskachetwan boosterism -- he bled green in more ways than one) at our meetings and conference calls. Lyle reminded all of us that life is important and that one person can do a tremendous amount of good.

Sincere condolences to Donna, who I had the privilege of meeting, and all of Lyle's friends and family. He will be greatly missed and we have vowed to continue his work in every way possible in honor of his remarkable life and contributions.
