Violet URSAN Obituary

Published by Regina Leader-Post on Jan. 24, 2017.
URSAN, Violet
Violet was born on February 26, 1926 and passed away on Saturday, January 21, 2017. She was predeceased by her husband John; parents William and Polly; sisters Anne and Kelly; and brother Dale. Violet is survived by her children Jim (Anne Marie), Cindy (Clem) and Roy (Theresa); seven grandchildren Leah (Tyler), Josh, Lindsay (Jaret), Jason, Matt, Jillian (Mike) and Sarah (Brandon); 13 great-grandchildren; sisters Aggie and Kathy; and several nieces, nephews and countless special friends. The last meal has been cooked. The dishes are put away and the house is tidy. Mom has left to join Dad. She's left us. Moms aren't supposed to leave their children. We are children, whether we are 6 or 60, and now what every child never wants to see happen…has. Mom could be counted on in many ways. She was always there and always responded to our needs and wants with love. She made sure no one was hungry, she was great at finding solutions and always had something in a drawer that would help. She would offer rides, or if you drove yourself, she would give you directions and call ahead to make sure that wherever you were going was open. She would always enquire on how things were going with genuine interest. She would never judge and the closest to disagreement she would voice was "how come you're doing that?" leaving us unsure if she agreed or was simply curious. Mom was constant in her love and reliable in her habits. We knew she would say yes to a family occasion, that she really wanted to attend concerts or anything her children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren were involved with. She would save newspaper clippings, she would prepare her television watching schedule, she would scratch her lottery tickets, play TV bingo and to live it up would go to the Vegas bingo halls. Each of us has a special memory of how her predictability would have us feel safe and assured. The woman we counted on to be there is now gone. We are left with her legacy of love and caring. That's what she did and thrived on…caring. Her selfless actions through her life reminds us of a prayer. Mom lived that prayer. And the prayer goes like this:
Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
where there is hatred, let us sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;
O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Our tribute to her is practising the lessons she has taught us. Mom…you will be profoundly missed.

Dear Jim, Cindy and Roy,
We are so sorry to hear of your beautiful Mom's passing. We have so many wonderful memories of her and your father. Our visits to your home when I was young were so welcoming and fun. Both your Mom and Dad were so kind, your Mom so gracious and your Dad always teasing and making us all feel at home. It is the greatest blessing in the world, to have parents who teach us such good lessons. Our deepest condolences.

On behalf of the Association of United Ukrainian Canadians (AUUC) I would like to take this opportunity to express the most sincere condolences to the family of Violet Ursan. Violet was a long time member of the Association. Violet and her mother, father, sisters and brothers were avid participants in the activities of the Association, going back many decades, to the 1940's and 1950's. Violet in her early years loved to sing, dance and enjoy Ukrainian culture to its fullest. This was then passed on to her children and grandchildren. In her later years (the last 30), Violet participated in assisting the Association with its fundraising. Fundraising through the making of Perogies for fundraising sales and the preparation of Perogies for Mosaic - A Festival of Cultures. Within our Association we refer to the Perogy pinchers as Perogy Princesses. We would all agree that Violet was one of the finest princesses that we had. Violet's smile, laughter, her cheerful disposition will be greatly missed by all those who knew her at the Ukrainian Cultural Centre. Sincerest condolences from the Executive members and friends of the AUUC.

Looking at this picture of Vi reminds me of my Mom, Evelyn MacNeill. I remember many happy times when the families got together when we were all so young. Vi had the gift of making whoever she was talking to feel special. I loved her and I loved her friendship with my Mom.

Dear Family,
I too am saddened by Vi's passing. It was this past summer that I visited with Vi in Regina and we shared memories and stories of her trips to Vegas and many laughs. Just last week we spoke on the phone and when I asked how are you doing, Vi? She responded, as always, "Oh Rory, I still miss John so much!" Well, dear Vi, may you rest in peace with your soul mate, John.
With deepest sympathy,
cousin Rory

To all the Ursan family:
How sad I am for all of you. As comforting as it is to know Vi didn't have to suffer what a shock and almost a disbelief she isn't just a phone call away. It leaves a hole in our hearts. We will miss our movies and many other good times. Over the years Roy and I had so many wonderful times together. The jam sessions when you were all kids come to mind and the vacations together. Their visits to Oklahoma and many more. So many good laughs and memories. I think of Vi, John and Roy together w, having a good laugh.
