Carl August Rothe, 85, of Murphysboro, formerly of Fayette County, went to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015 at Carbondale Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Josemon Hoem officiating. Burial will be in Murdale Garden of Memory in Murphysboro, with military rites by American Legion Paul Stout Post 127 of Murphysboro. Visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Monday, at Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, and from 9 a.m. until time of services on Tuesday at the church. Mr. Rothe was born on Oct. 5, 1930, in rural Laclede Township, Fayette County, the son of Fred H. and Ida Wachholz Rothe. He was united in marriage to Ina Purcell on Aug. 18, 1957, at Four Mile Prairie Christian Church in Brownstown.
Carl attended elementary and middle school at St. Peter Lutheran School in St. Peter. He graduated from LaGrove High School in Farina. After graduating high school, he worked for Rothe Chevrolet in St. Peter. He also attended four years of electrical apprentice schooling.
Carl was inducted into the U. S. Army on Nov. 9, 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean conflict. He was stationed at Ft. Lee in Virginia, and he served in Sampigny, France; he supported the chemical division. They lived in Vandalia, where he worked for McDonald Electric as an electrician. In 1965, they moved to Murphysboro, where he went to work as an electrician at the Physical Plant at SIU-C. He retired from the university in 1994 after 29 years of service.
Carl was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Local 702 IBEW, American Legion Post 127 in Murphysboro, Jackson County Farm Bureau and SIU Alumni Association.
Carl was a loving and gracious husband and father. He enjoyed fishing and being outdoors, spending as much time as he could with his grandchildren, attending their many school and sports activities. He was a St. Louis Cardinals and SIU Saluki fan.
He is survived by his wife; son, Michael W. Rothe and his wife Cathy Jo of Murphysboro; daughters, Carla S. Quigley and her husband Bill of Murphysboro, Cathryn R. Stovall and her husband Robert of Dunwoody, Ga.; grandchildren, Amanda Rothe Welch and husband Roger of Falls Church, Va., Justin Rothe of Murphysboro, Nicholas and Kyle Quigley of Murphysboro, and Kayla and Jarod Stovall of Dunwoody, Ga.; a great-grandchild, Josie Welch; half-sister, Doris Courson of St. Peter; sisters-in-law, Sue Rothe of Hammond and Sue Wicke of Vandalia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Leta Rothe; stepbrother, Wayne Wicke; half brother, Leo Rothe; half sister; Betty Rothe; brother-in-law, Richard Courson; nephew, Todd Wicke; and niece; Jill Wicke.
