Mrs. Bunyard was born Doris Elaine Greer to Marvin L. & Myrtle Kastning Greer at home in Shafter Township on June 10, 1930, one of seven children. She married Paul Bunyard on Nov. 29, 1947.
They first lived in Vandalia, briefly, before moving to Hagarstown, where they began their family with the birth of two sons. In 1953, they moved to Greenville, where they have since resided on what became their family farm. Here, their family grew with the addition of four daughters. Elaine was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother.
She loved music her entire life, mastering the piano as a young girl and later the violin. She loved to sing and passed on her love of music to her four daughters. She was adventurous, always eager to travel and at age 50 learned how to downhill ski. After raising her children, she returned to school and became a certified nursing assistant and later completed training to become a massage therapist. She was also a devoted member of Wisetown Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. Above all, she loved spending time with family and friends. Her generous spirit knew no bounds, as she reached out to all with a quick smile, warm embrace or a hot meal.
Elaine is survived by her loving husband of nearly 68 years, Paul Bunyard. In addition she is survived by her six children; Stephen Bunyard of Santa Fe, N.M., Scott Bunyard of Vandalia, Nancy (Rick) Kidd of St. Joseph, Patricia (Jim) Black of Loves Park, Jan (Buck) Rogers of St. Louis, Mo., and Jill (Bruce) Butler of St. Louis, Mo. She is also survived by 13 grandchildren, Zoe Bunyard, Cherie Straub, Shawn Bunyard, Garrett Bunyard, Bryan Kidd, Andrew Kidd, Megan Black, J. Greer Black, Paul Black, Lily Rogers, Cecilia Rogers, Sarah Butler and Clay Butler, as well as five great-grandchildren, Kayla Straub, Carly Straub, Emma Straub, Jessica Bunyard and Jacob Bunyard; and one great-great-granddaughter, Sophia Bunyard. Also surviving are her brother, Henry J. "Cork" (Mary Ellen) Greer of rural Greenville; stepsister Donna Chrisman of Vandalia; and stepbrother Marvin Heather of Mowequa.
