James E. Smith, 71, of Durham, N.C., formerly of Vandalia, passed away on June 4, 2015, in his home.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Sunday in Witt Cemetery, with Ron Criswell officiating. Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday at Stiehl-Dawson Funeral Home in Nokomis. A memorial will be held later this summer at New Hope Nazarene Church in Hillsborough, N.C. Online condolences may be expressed at www.stiehldawson.com.
Mr. Smith was born on Dec. 30, 1943, in Vandalia. He was the son of Andrew Lee Smith and Margery Waive Thoman Meyer. He married LaDonna Jean Brookshire on Sept. 2, 1968, at Witt Christian Church in Witt.
He was a 1962 graduate of Vandalia High School and served in the Army from 1962-65. He was a retired federal employee and a member of New Hope Church of the Nazarene in Hillsborough, N.C. His pastimes included reading, watching TV, working on the computer, putting puzzles together and spending time with his wife and grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; daughters, Michelle and her husband John Rockwell of Blacksburg, Va., and Jamie and her husband Ian Soper of Spotsylvania, Va.; grandchildren, Lewis and Leah Rockwell, and Amelia and Zoe Soper (baby brother Moses due June 15, 2015); brother, Kenneth Joe Smith of Burk Burnett, Texas; stepsister, Marilyn Girll of Tinley Park; nephew, Kenny Smith of Vandalia; and other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, George Meyer; brother, John Lee Smith; and stepbrother, Leonard Meyer.
