Millard Mills, 96, of St. Elmo, passed away at 5:55 a.m. on Friday, April 28, 2017, at his home, surrounded by his family.
Services celebrating the life of Millard will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday at Trinity Chapel United Methodist Church (Post Oak) in rural St. Elmo, with one-hour viewing prior to services. Burial with military rites will be in Post Oak Cemetery in rural St. Elmo. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Monday at C&A Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo. Mr. Mills was born on March 11, 1921, in Fayette County, the son of Orville and Mabel (Hicks) Mills. He married Fairy Alice McIntyre on June 9, 1946.
He was a veteran and served his country as an Army medic during World War II. He was a member of Trinity Chapel UMC and served several offices in the church. While a lifetime farmer, he also worked as a school bus driver for the St. Elmo School District and was a long-time laborer at the St. Elmo Grain Elevator. He was also employed at Richardson Brothers Greenhouse. Millard served on the St. Elmo School Board for three years.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years; sons, Glen Mills and his wife Ann of Brownstown, and Mark Mills of St. Elmo; daughters, Marie and her husband Jim Hopper of Farina, Norma Dunn of Ft. Scott, Kan., and Ruth and her husband Lewis Ryder of Neoga; sister, Rosemary Owen of St. Elmo; 13 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Orvilla Sarver; a brother, Elvin "Shorty" Mills; and a son-in-law, Joel Dunn.
