Mrs. Dees was born on Feb. 20, 1921, in Greenville, the daughter of Ernie and Clara Wasmuth Streiff. She married Joe Dees on June 22, 1945, in Greenville, and they were happily married for 54 years; Joe preceded her in death in 1999.
Peggy was a former teacher and homemaker, and an active member of the community. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Vandalia Woman's Club and Beta Sigma Phi, all of Vandalia. She also served on the Shagbark Girl Scout Council for many years and regularly volunteered as a "Pink Lady" at Fayette County Hospital in Vandalia.
Peggy's husband, Joe, often referred to her as "my little, fiery red head," yet with a "sweet and vivacious nature." She was known by those in the community as a "real lady" – genuine, kind and generous. Her family remembers her as a loving and caring mother and grandmother who was always up for an adventure. She was quick to laugh and had a ready sense of humor. Peggy loved the St. Louis Cardinals and was an avid golfer and birder. She was a loyal and steadfast friend, and will be greatly missed.
She is survived by: daughters and son-in-laws, Nancy and George Wood of Port Angeles, Wash., Debbie and Peter Cadigan of Eugene, Ore., and Martha and Ron Bateman, Fort Collins, Co.; 14 grandchildren, Erin, Josh, Jacob, Mandy, Katie, Kelly, Jenny, Danny, Ted, Wendy, Michelle, Michael, Katie and Christy; 14 great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a brother, Ned Streiff.
