Robert Rhodes Owen, 87, of St. Elmo, passed away at 9:40 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 18, 2016, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield, from injuries sustained in a vehicle accident on Aug. 31 near Brownstown.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday at C&A Pagel Funeral Home in St. Elmo, with the Rev. Dan Laack officiating. Burial will be in McInturff Cemetery in Hagarstown. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. until time of services on Friday at the funeral home. Memorials: First United Methodist Church in St. Elmo. Online condolences can be expressed at
Mr. Owen was born on Sept. 30, 1928, in St. Elmo, the fifth child of Frank and Mary (Rhodes) Owen. He met Joanne Elmore of Altamont in 1953, and they were married in May 1954 at First United Methodist Church in St. Elmo, with the bride's father, the Rev. Virgil Elmore, officiating the wedding service.
Robert graduated from St. Elmo High School in 1947, and in 1948, he joined the U.S Army. His basic training was at Ft. Sill in Oklahoma, then he served overseas, including Korea, Okinawa and the Army occupation of Japan. After his service in the Army, he worked for McDonnell-Douglas for 37 years, retiring as a supervisor in 1990.
Robert loved taking pictures, gardening, playing the piano and spending time with his friends and his grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife; son, Brian Owen and his wife Brenda of Collinsville; sisters, Catherine McCaskey of Blue Springs, Mo., and Marybelle McLean of St. Louis, Mo.; granddaughters, Marcy and her husband Jason Vetrone of Collinsville, Gessica and her husband Brandon of Collinsville, Casey and her husband Clint Massey of Troy, and Brittany and her husband Todd Mersinger of Collinsville; and great-grandchildren, Haleigh Mersinger and Collin Massey.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Joe Owen; and three sisters, Pauline Stokes, Louise Adams and Erma Kennedy.
