Robert W. Scullen, 86, Brownstown
Robert William Scullen, 86, of Brownstown, passed away at 3:20 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 24, 2013, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.
Services were held on Dec. 31 at Temple Baptist Church in Vandalia. Visitation was from 4-6 p.m., with a memorial service at 6 p.m. Memorials: Temple Baptist Church, RR 3, Vandalia, Ill. 62471 or .
Mr. Scullen was born on Oct. 6, 1927, at home in Creston, Iowa, the son of Richard W. and Ruth Emma Pinkerton Scullen.
Robert attended school and graduated 12th grade in Creston, Iowa, and served our country with the Army in World War II. After serving our country he went to Joliet, to work at the Joliet Arsenal. When they had cutbacks in employment, he went to work at the Joliet Central High School as a security guard, and in 1978, he became a janitor at the school. Robert retired in 1992. Robert or Bob and/or Grandpa, as he was called by many family and friends, married Ruby Hayes from Ramsey on Sept. 11,1967. Ruby and Bob had a good life. They both liked music and were good singers. They lived in Joliet until October 1992 and moved to Brownstown. Bob and Ruby were married 26 years when Ruby passed away on Oct. 21,1993. Bob joined a big family when he married Ruby. He was stepdad to 7 daughters: Loretta and her husband Melvin Wheeler of Lafayette, Ind., Ann McCart of Mulberry, Ind., Judy and her husband Tom Steiner of Mulberry Grove, Janet Bell of Vandalia, the late Jackie (Mrs. Steve) Chrisman of Brownstown, Jeannie and her husband Vernie McCammack of Brownstown, and Joyce Kistler of Brownstown. Bob attended Temple Baptist Church in Vandalia.
Bob leaves six stepdaughters and 24 grandchildren and 109 great- and great-great-grandchildren in Illinois; and nieces Kathleen (Scullen) Backer and Carol (Scullen) and her husband Barry Orness, nephews Richard Scullen and his wife Cathy, and Steven and his wife Mary Scullen, seven great-nieces and -great nephews, and seven great-great-nieces and -nephews in Iowa.
He was preceded in death by parents; wife; brother, Daniel Scullen; sister-in-law, Shirley; and stepdaughter, Jackie (Bunyard) Chrisman.
