Susan Ann "Sue" Tarter Jordan, 61, of Central City, Iowa, died on Nov. 23, 2016, at the Dennis and Donna Oldforf Hospice House of Mercy in Hiawatha, Iowa, after a three-year battle with cancer.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 10, at Mother of Dolors Catholic Church in Vandalia. A celebration of life memorial will be held at the University of Northern Iowa Commons in the spring of 2017. Mrs. Jordan was born on Feb. 5, 1955, in Pana, the second child and first daughter of William Rodell and Lura Tarter. Her birth marked the first girl born into the Tarter family in 89 years.
Sue was a 1973 graduate of Vandalia Community High School, and was active in numerous student organizations, especially yearbook and choir. She served as editor-in-chief of the Vandalois yearbook and was a member of the Special Chorus her senior year.
She married Philip Jordan of Tuscola on Aug. 7, 1976, at St. John's Catholic Chapel in the Newman Center on the campus of the University of Illinois in Urbana. She graduated from the University of Illinois the following year.
Sue worked at the University of Northern Iowa for 17 years and especially enjoyed working with the students. She enjoyed cross-stitching, gardening, cooking and travel in her leisure time.
She has been a resident of Central City, Iowa, for the past four years, and lived in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for 31 years before that.
She is survived by her husband; daughters, Elizabeth Anne Jordan Etchells (Ross) of West Des Moines, Iowa, and Catherine Teresa Jordan McCarthy (Sean) of St. Louis, Mo.; surrogate children, Jaqueline and Gleidson Gouveia of Iowa City, Iowa., and Lindsay and Mark Doeden of Cedar Falls, Iowa; Mother, Luralene Engeling Tarter of Vandalia; siblings, William Rodell Tarter Jr. (Barb) of Edwardsville, Diane Straub (Randy) of Vandalia; Stephen Tarter (Beth) of Vandalia, David Tarter (Kim) of Alhambra, Mark Tarter (Lori) of Sigel, Jim Tarter (Sheila) of Belleville, Kathy Ehrat (Todd) of Savoy, and Jeff Tarter (Melinda) of St. Peters, Mo.; 26 nieces and nephews; and 15 great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Rodell Tarter; grandparents, John and Ora Engeling, and Gerald and Margaret Tarter; and her beloved dog, Maggie.
