Hubert "Leon" Rogers was born to Hubert and Bess Rogers on June 18, 1931 in Lebanon.
Leon was a graduate of Lebanon High School. He went to University of Kentucky and graduated in 1958 with a degree in physical education and minors in English and science. He later earned his master's degree from Mississippi College in 1968.
Upon graduation from University of Kentucky he started his teaching and coaching career in Chattahoochee, Florida. In 1963 he moved to Fort Walton Beach, Forida, accepting the head basketball coach and assistant football position at Choctawhatchee High School. He departed the coaching ranks after a highly successful career in athletics and accepted a promotion to assistant principal at Meigs Junior High School in Shalimar, Florida. In 1969 he moved to Ocala, Florida, to become the principal of a brand new high school, Vanguard. He was also principal at Dunnellon High School. In 1976 he was elected superintendent of Schools of Marion County in a runoff election and served in that position for eight years. He thoroughly loved the interaction with the students and loved the career path he chose. He was a strong believer in continuing education.
Survivors include: three daughters, Jackie Ormond (Richard), Marsha Anderson (Don), and Traci Bryan (Kevin); three grandchildren, Lauren Balloon (Scott), Somer Doyle, and Hunter Bryan (Amanda); and four great-grandchildren, Ethan Bryan (10), Camden Balloon (4), Kinley Balloon (19 months), and Landon Bryan (7 months).
Leon will be sorely missed by his family and friends who loved him very much. He was well known and respected in the Ocala and Dunnellon communities. He never met a stranger and always asked where an individual was from, what school they attended, and what they did. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather and lifetime "coach."
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, at Bosley Funeral Home, Lebanon, with burial in Old Liberty Cemetery, Bradfordsville. Visitation is from 2 till 3 p.m.
