Columbus, GA- Mr. Lieutenant Charles Stevens, 87, of Columbus passed on Wednesday, January 2, 2019 at Piedmont Midtown Medical Center. Funeral service for Mr. Stevens will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday, January 12, 2019 at First African Baptist Church, 901 5th Ave, Columbus, GA 31901. Pastor Ambers Glenn, Jr. officiating and Pastor Benjamin McGruder, Jr. will deliver the eulogy. Interment will be at Green Acres Cemetery according to the Charles E. Huff's International Funeral Home, Inc. Viewing will be held on Friday, January 11, 2019 from 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM at the funeral home located at 927 - 5th Avenue.
Lieutenant Charles Stevens also known as "Sonny" was born on November 12, 1931 to the late Louisa Stevens in Hurtsboro, AL. He was a proud 1949 graduate of William H. Spencer High School. He was a loyal and devoted member of Lewis Memorial Baptist Church for over 60 years and he served in several capacities including, Assistant Superintendent, Trustee, Sunday School teacher and Treasurer. Lieutenant was known world wide for serving the famous scramble dog for over 68 years at Dinglewood Pharmacy on Wynnton Road in Columbus. His fame started when he created the special recipe for the chili that covers the scramble dog. His famous scramble dog traveled to Washington, DC when Jimmy Carter was president and was served at weddings in Saudi, Arabia and Florence, Italy. In 2002, Columbus City Council issued a resolution that recognized him for his untiring service to Dinglewood Pharmacy and the Columbus community.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Louisa Stevens and his sister, Mattie Lewis.
Remaining and feeling a definite loss are two nieces, Valerie Lewis, Columbus and Veronica Glenn (Ambers, Jr.), Atlanta, GA and many other relatives and friends.

Their was only one Lieutenant in the whole world. Visiting with him at the counter at Dinglewood was like being with a family member in their kitchen. He knew a lot about us and always seemed interested. He has been missed, but even more now that we know we will never see him again at his place at the chili pot.
