Columbus, GA- Mrs. Dora Beatrice Etherly Jackson transitioned peacefully Wednesday at her home. She was 87 years of age.
The daughter of the John T. and Fannie Bell Etherly, Mrs. Jackson was born in Nashville, TN. She obtained her BS degree in Science from Tennessee A & I University, her Masters from Tuskegee Institute, and a Educational Social Worker Certificate from the University of Georgia. She was employed as a classroom educator in the Russell and Muscogee County Schools, retiring following 37 years of dedicated service. Lynch Road( Mamie Mathews) Elementary Schools, Marshall and Eddy Jr. High Schools, and 17 years as a visiting teacher/school social worker.
She was a devout member of First African Baptist Church, serving as a Deaconess, Esther Missionary Circle, Trustees Ministry, Vacation Bible School, and a member of the Century Club. She also served as the Historian of the church, along with various other ministries. She was a life member and Golden Soror with Gamma Tau Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc., Links, Inc., Orchette Civic and Social Club, Gracious Ladies of Georgia, founding President of JUGS, Inc., and was a docent at the Columbus Museum. She was an avid bridge player with the Girl Friends, Matrons and Just a Few Bridge Clubs. Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Clarence H. Jackson, and three sisters, Eva E. Snyder, Lillian E. Campbell and Lady E. Drake.
Surviving her departure with cherished memories, include: her loving and devoted sister, Gwendolyn E. Beard (Dr. Israel); two nieces, Sheila Odom and Lori Daily (Bryon); two nephews, William H. Campbell and Randy Campbell; great nieces, Erin Daily, Erica Daily, Lori Rucker, Amber O. Conley (Kevin), Ashley O. Perry (Marcus), Malinda Stovall (Stan); two great nephews, Eric Daily and Lendl Campbell (Trisha); her step daughter, Marva Jean Courtney; two step grandsons, Chad Courtney and Michael Courtney; a devoted goddaughter, Evergreen F. Covington (Elbert); and supported extended families, Lula and Marvin Smith, Annie Ruth Davis, Louise Frazier, Walter Bowles, and other dear friends.
The Homegoing Celebration for Mrs. Jackson will be held Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at 12:00 noon at the First African Baptist Church with interment at Green Acres Cemetery. Reverend Roderick B. Green will officiate with Reverend Robert M. Dickerson delivering the eulogy. Visitation is Monday at 1:00 p.m. with Memorial Dedications beginning at 5:00 at the funeral home.
