Dunwoody, GA- Mr. George Dewey King, Jr age 96 of Dunwoody, GA passed away Sunday, October 7, 2018. George was born in Columbus GA. His father was a Railroad Conductor which gave George his lifelong love of trains. He was one of four boys born to George and Eva King Sr. Prior to serving in the military he graduated from Jordan Vocational High School in 1939 and North Georgia College in 1941. In 1943 he entered World War II as a Private in the Army Air Corps. George received his Honorable discharged in 1946 as a Corporal in the 19th Weather Squadron. Once home, George, decided to finish his education at Auburn University which in 1955 was Alabama Polytechnic Institute. With a Bachelor of Civil Engineering, George worked for the federal government in the Housing and Urban Development Department as a Civil Engineer.
While working in Charlotte NC he met his wife of 63 years, Betty Keistler. They married in 1955 and made their home in the Atlanta area. In 1963 they had one son, Chip. In addition to his family and career, George, also continued to manage his pine tree farm in Opelika Al. The land he acquired over the years he proudly named Wildwood Farm which was acknowledged as a Treasure Forest by the Alabama Forestry Planning Committee in 1995. Today this land supports pine trees for harvest and lakes for the family's enjoyment.
In addition to his passion for trains and forestry, George was a lifelong Shriner and supported many needy causes. Surviving are: Wife - Betty Keistler King of Dunwoody, Son and Daughter in law - George Dewey King III "Chip" (Melanie) of Smyrna, Granddaughter - Amanda Darlene King of Smyrna. Visitation with the family will be at the Carmichael Funeral Home in Smyrna, GA Thursday, October 11 from 2:00 to 4:00. A graveside service will be held Friday, October 12 at 1:00 at Park Hill Cemetery in Columbus GA.
