Columbus, GA- James L. Fay was born July 3, 1931 in Rochester, New York., son of Lester Thorp Fay and Jane Baumler Fay. His family moved to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1938 and he graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School in 1949. He attended Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida and graduated in 1953 with a B.A. in Business and Finance.
He attended the United States Navy ROC Program in Long Beach, California and was commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy in August, 1953. He was assigned to the USS Alstede in Sasebo, Japan. He served with the 7th Fleet during the Korean Conflict and was reassigned to the 6th Fleet at Norfolk, Virginia and served in the Mediterranean until his honorable discharge in August, 1955 as a Lieutenant in the United States Naval Reserve.
He moved to Columbus, Georgia in 1955 to begin a banking career with the First National Bank of Columbus and retired after 36 years of service. He finished his career with Synovus Securities, Inc. as a director of business development.
Jim was very active in the community including service as a Charter Member and Past President of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Columbus, Past President of the Chattahoochee Valley AIB Banking Group and Past President of the Green Island Country Club. He also served 11 ½ years on the Muscogee County School Board including 3 years as President. Jim was very active in his beloved Trinity Episcopal Church serving four terms on the Vestry including on term as Senior Warden.
He was fondly known as "Big Jim" and enjoyed many hunting and fishing trips with his buddies including sons Clifton and Jimmy. He was also an avid Georgia Bulldog fan and enjoyed many games in Athens with family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Elise Feimster Fay; brother Judge Peter Thorp Fay (Pat); children Clifton C. Fay (Nancy), Lucy Fay Knight (Seth) and James L. Fay, Jr. He was predeceased by daughter-in-law Wesley Harrell Fay. His beloved grandchildren include Sarah Shepherd Knight, Dr. Clifton C. Fay, Jr. (Laura), Frances Knight Bussey (John), Leland P. Fay (Marie), Seth L. Knight, IV (Catharine), Martha Banks Fay, Elise McGehee Fay, Porter DeLaunay Fay, Hannah Alston Fay; and great-grandchildren Annabelle Godwin Fay, John Wycliffe Bussey, IV and Lucile Shepherd Fay.
A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on Monday August 27, 2018 at 2:00 pm with a reception following in the parish hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church or the .
