Atlanta, GA- Mr. Robert Lee Adams, Sr. passed away peacefully on Monday, September 10, 2018 with his loving wife by his side after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's and cancer.
Robert, nicknamed Sonny Boy, was born on July 31, 1937 to the late Thomas and Annie Lee Rogers in Columbus, Georgia, where he and his eight siblings grew up. After graduating from Spencer High School in 1956, Robert journeyed to Atlanta and continued the Adams family tradition of attending Morris Brown College, graduating in 1960. While at Morris Brown, he played the tenor saxophone in the band, worked in the dining hall, and became a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. On March 23, 2018, Alpha Phi Alpha awarded him a 60 year certificate. Most significantly of all, he met the love of his life, Dorothy Jean Rogers. She was a city girl he spotted strolling across the bridge on Hunter Street one day. Not taking a chance on losing her, they married in 1961 and became grateful parents to three wonderful children.
Celebrating Robert's Christian journey home are is wife; children, Robert L. Adams, Jr., Detroit, MI; Daralyn J. Adams, New York, NY; Vincent R. Adams (Ana Lopez), Oakland, CA; grandchildren, Robert L. Adams, III and Taylor M. Adams, Ann Arbor, MI and Nicolas D. Adams, Oakland, CA; sister, Anna Adams Mims, Columbus, GA; brothers, Henry Adams (Louise), Atlanta, GA and George Adams (Marilyn), Saginaw, MI; and sister-in-law, Dr. Nellie Adams.
Robert's life was one well lived. He will be remember most for his quiet demeanor and dedicated service to others. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Atlanta.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking that donations be made to the , the , and the Bethel United Methodist Church Building Fund. Arrangements entrusted to Murray Funeral Home, Atlanta, GA.
