Michael E. McLaughlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 10, 2006.
A gregarious wisecracker, Michael E. McLaughlin developed such a close relationship with tribal leaders that he was dubbed "The Sheikh of Sheikhs." It was a nickname that was soon picked up by fellow officers. "Lt. Col. McLaughlin was not content with orchestrating and planning behind the scenes, but was an officer that led from the front," said Col. Grey Berrier. "He displayed extreme personal courage, selfless service and dedication to duty." McLaughlin, 44, of Mercer, Pa., was killed Jan. 5 in Ramadi when a suicide bomber detonated in a crowd of Iraqi police recruits. He was assigned to Washington and became the first officer of the Pennsylvania National Guard killed in action since World War II. He was instrumental in setting up the police recruiting drive, which attracted 300 people "He was a leader in word, deed and action." Berrier said. McLaughlin was a 1980 high school graduate and joined the National Guard in April 1980. He earned a bachelor''s degree and a master''s degree from the University of Pittsburgh. He is survived by his wife, Tammy, and daughters Ericha, 18, and Erin, 10.

Tammy, girls, Rebecca and family,
This morning I spoke with Maj. Pat Moore. My son Kiel has tackled a rather large English final project for his school, Norfolk Academy in Norfolk Virginia. Kiel wishes to honor his Uncle. Maj. Moore spoke highly of Mike. I will cherish the conversation. I wish life had delt all of us a different hand of cards. I am proud that my half brother touched so many.

To Mike's family

My name is Jerry Stillions, I knew Mike when he was with Liberty Mutual. I was searching the web trying to reconnect with him after all these years. I am deeply saddened to find that he was killed in Iraq. Mike was a fine Industrial Hygienist and great friend. I am honored that I had the chance to know him.He loved his family and his hounds. I only wish I would have tried to find him years sooner. I will miss him.

Holding you all in my thoughts and prayers.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Michael, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

There is nothing that I can say or do to take away the pain or bring you peace in your time of sorrow, but I will offer you and your family my heart felt condolences. I also offer you my prayers that in time the pain will easy and the memories of your HERO will carry you through each day and night. I want to thank your HERO, for his/her selfless act of becoming a member of the armed forces, his/her willingness to defend the United States of America, all that we hold sacred and for the sacrifice that will forever be etched in the memories of all those who knew him/her. Though tears can never bring him/her back, we hope that our tears express our gratitude for the sacrifice that he/she made and our sorrow at his/her passing. I believe for every fallen HERO there is a star shining brightly up above to remind us of the precious gift we were given.

Your mission on earth is complete and you are now a member of GOD’s Heavenly armed forces. Stand down brave warrior and take your rightful place in Heaven with all the HEROES who have passed before.

I made a special promise to LE RON A. WILSON, a dear family friend who joined the Army with three other friends, one of whom is my son (Le Ron was killed in action on 07/06/07 at the age of 18) on the day he was laid to rest as I touched his coffin, that I would never forget him nor would I forget those that gave their lives for our country before him, with him and after him and so when I came across www.legacy.com, I thought what a great way to keep my promise to Le Ron, so I will continue to leave tributes in each guest book until the day there is no longer the need to leave these tributes to a FALLEN HERO.

REST IN PEACE, HERO, YOU WILL NEVER BE FORGOTTEN!!

Tammy and the Girls, There isn't a day that goes by that I do not think of Mac, he will always be in my thoughts and prayers all the days of my life. I was proud to serve with him in Ramadi and all the years prior to our deployment. He was my big brother from the first time I met him over a decade ago. He was always looking after me and keeping me in line, he took me under his wing as he did countless junior officers; mentoring, molding, and taking care of us. I am a better person for having known Mac. A piece of Mac lives in all of us that served with him and always will. I am truly sorry for your loss, and I will always be here you guys if you ever need me FOR ANYTHING, just like Mac was for us. May God grant him eternal peace and may his light shine upon him.

To Tammy and all of the Mclaughlin Family:
Today, we honor all soldiers and families who have sacrificed and served this Great Nation of ours. The Veterans of Foreign Wars Local Post #315 also unveiled a Veterans Memorial in New Castle, Pa. at Cascade Park to honor LTC Mclaughlin, SFC Brozovich, CPL Gettings, SPC Kasecky, SPC Curran and SPC Moxley who have made the ultimate sacrifice on the Global War on Terrorism. In attendance there were WWII Veterans, Korean War Veterans, Vietnam Veterans, Desert Storm Veterans, Operation Iraqi Freedom Veterans, soldiers presently serving in the Pennsylvania Army National Guard and soldiers who served with LTC Mclaughlin while deployed with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team. It is a Beautiful Memorial that I hope all Veterans, families of Veterans as well as anybody who has served to someday get the chance to view. It was truly an honor to participate in this unveiling for our serviceman. If you wish to purchase a brick in memory of any soldier or family member who has served in any conflict, please stop by the VFW Local Post# 315 Post for information on how to purchase a brick and to be a part of a truly beautiful Memorial. This memorial is not for profit, it is for all members who have served and who wish to be a part of history. To all of our soldiers and family members who have served since 9/11, I ask you to view this memorial when you get the opportunity and to salute your fellow warriors. To Tammy and the Mclaughlin Family, I would be honored to escort you to the Memorial.

My Uncle has been reconized many times for what he did... and everyone always then says "We're sorry" but honestly... they shouldn't be... because we all know he's looking down on us laughing and saying, "That's right, I'm the center of attention!" He always wanted to be in the spot light... and now, he has what he's always wanted.

To Mike's family and his many, many friends:

My deepest and most profound condolences go out to all of us for our loss. And my apologies for not acknowledging Mike's untimely fate sooner, as I learned only yesterday, Memorial Day, while walking past a television during the afternoon newscast and was stunned to silence when I realized it was he who was being recognized.

I had the honor and privilege of meeting 'Mac' at the time that he entered into a partnership that formed Hanz-Mac Construction. On first introduction, he struck me as serious, focused and disciplined; very business-like. On our second meeting, he displayed a keen sense of humor and locker-room sort of waggishness, which forces you to like him immediately. I got to know him quite well while working on a certain project with factors that tested one's patience. If this were not enough, there were other complications within his company, such as Mike's partner's deployment to Bosnia, which Mike had to deal with as well. During it all Mike proved unflappable, never lost his cool, or his sense of humor. If one of his guys did something bone-headed, Mike would put his hands on his hips, get this silly, little grin and shake his head back-and-forth, as if in amusement, and showing no sign of being perturbed. If a sub-contractor didn't get the proper tint match in the concrete and the client was in a fit over it, Mike handled both with the finesse of an experienced diplomat. Needless to say I admired Mike immensely and was hoping to work with him on future projects.

The last time I spoke with Mike was occasioned when I was watching a Fox News segment with Col. David Hunt, and it was bothering me that he, Col. Hunt, reminded me of someone. Then it hit me, Col. Hunt looked just like what I pictured Mike to look like in thirty years or so, so I phoned Mike to tell him this. I'm so sorry we shall never have the chance to see if that were to happen.

To those who read this but never enjoyed the pleasure of meeting Mike, rest assured that every nice sentiment expressed in these posts, every complimentary news article written about his accomplishments, every word written, memorializing his existence, are true in every sense, with not a grain of embellishment: he truly was a hero, an inspirational role model, and a tragic loss to our community.

My sympathy, my thoughts and my prayers are with you all.

As I walk the hallway on a daily basis to either get something out of the Operations room or to see SSG "Chookie" Lacamera, when I return from either of those locations. I am reminded daily of the sacrifices that have been given from the pictures on our walls at Bn HQ's. LTC Mclaughlin will always be remembered here for his great sense of humor and an enthusiasm that was unmatched. LTC Mac was firm, but fair. Made you laugh so hard he'd bring tears to your eyes. Yes, he'll be missed, but never forgotten.

Dear family of Col. Mac, Words cannot express what a loss it is to your family and Mac's military family. My son was with Col. Mac when the attack occurred, thankfully he was not injured. I know that Col. Mac's death hit him so very hard. He was truly a great soldier and well thought of by every soldier I have met that knew him.

May God bless your family and the 2/28 BCT. Colonel Mac will definitely be missed and never forgotten.

At a juncture in my military career where things could have gone either way, Mac gave me a lot of support and encouragement, some of it of course laced with colorful motivational language. Mac set the example encouraging his fellow officers to take their work seriously. I am certain that many soldiers and officers who were influenced by him saved many lives in Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan and who knows where else in the future and that will always be his legacy.

I wish to say "thank you and you will be missed" to LTC McLaughlin. I served with him in the 107th for many years. We shared many laughs at drill, summer camps and at our exercises at the Gap and Germany. I will smile when thinking about Operation Blazing Saddles and having a few beers in Germany and Ireland. That was a great flight back from Grafenwoehr. I can often remember you putting your hands on your hips and shaking your head when something got on your nerves. I still remember the last time we spoke in my office at Hunt Armory. I was getting ready to deploy in 2003 to Iraq and your final words were "take care my friend and see you when you get back." I didn't see you when I returned and I never got to say the same to you. You are a good man, officer and friend. I hope you are telling jokes in Heaven and saved a spot there for me when I arrive someday. We will have alot to catch up on.

Rest in Peace

Dear Mclauglin Family and Friends,

Today I was informed of Mike's sacrafice he made for our freedom. I was not a close friend of Mike's only a person that knew him briefly over the last ten years or so. I know that the world change for me when I learned of his passing. What he loved is what I saw in Mike. Hard work, family, his pets, relaxation and the beach. The beach is where I met Mike, Tammy and the children. The family rented my house in Sandbridge Beach Virginia over the years. They endured hurricanes, evacuations and I am sure some good times. If any thing was broken or I needed work to be done, Mike would fix it or build it with joy. He reminded me of myself. He would rather be building or fixing something than lying on the beach relaxing. If I could chose a friend on first impressions it would be Mike. He was a true American Hero and he will remain in my memeory forever.

Just a thought to let you know you are in our prayers. LTC Mack was my son MSG Irons "boss" (as he called him). He had high regard for him as a person and as a soldier and feels deeply his loss. I simply wish to let you know our thoughts are with you and I am greatful for the LTC for making the tour in Iraq a bit better for my son and for the opportunity he had to serve with him. From our family to yours may God watch over you and you family and may the Spirit comfort you in this time of need. God Bless America!

To the family of LT. Col. Michael E.

McLaughlin,

Even though I did not know your son, I am forever in his debt. For all I hold dear is because of men like him who are willing to die for us for their country so my small grandchildren one day will not have to, and there will not be another September 11th. He will always be a hero in my heart. May God surround you with His loving arms and bring you the comfort and peace only He can give. There really are no words.... I just want you to know I care and I am so sad for your loss. Thank you again for sharing Michael and for your sacrifice as well as his.

To the McLaughlin Family~

I deeply regret the news of your loss, may you be in everyone who signs this or hears of the news' prayers. I personally never knew "Mack" but my mother has worked with him before. I never have good feelings when hearing of a loss of a officer/soldier reguardless of the branch. When my mother (Debi Mattocks) told me the news i was at work and it was very disturbing. words cant express the gratitude.

I heard your name on NPR as I was driving home from work in Los Angeles. I was concerned, and then I heard "will be buried tomorrow in Butler, Pennsylvania". My heart leapt because I'm from Butler. Oh behalf of myself and my sons, Harrison and Jared, I pray that God bless you, and may he bestow special care and protection on your wife and children.

It matters not whether we knew him or not... whether we had ever met... If we never saw his face nor heard his voice...

We know of his deeds...

We know of his dedication ...

We know of his bravery .. and his fears...

We know of those he loved and who loved him..

We know of your loneliness and your pain... your tears and your grief...

We also know of your pride and the wonderful loving memories you each have.

Please know that we share your sorrow and care about you, your loss, and your pain...

May God be with each of you and may you draw strength and over powering love from one another.. and please know there are prayers going to God for you.
