CHARLES LACY “BUDDY” TATE Obituary

Published by McKenzie Mortuary from Nov. 5 to Nov. 6, 2011.
Lake Waccamaw: Charles Lacy "Buddy" Tate, Jr. went to be with the Lord on November 05, 2011, at his beloved Holden Beach, North Carolina. He was born in Sanford on August 26, 1940, to Charles Lacy Tate, Sr. and Olive Monroe Seagrove Tate. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Olive Tate Fox, and niece, Catherine Knight Arges. He is survived by his wife, Mildred "Millie" Stone Tate of the home, with whom he was married for 46 years; daughter Mary Lacey Tate of Lake Waccamaw, and her partner Edward M. Corbett of Wilmington; cousins Elizabeth Weatherly Tate of Charlotte, Rev. and Mrs. Fred C. Holder of Montreat, Mrs. Ann Seagrove Tolleson of Cary, Mrs. Billie Durkee of Montpelier, VT; and his loyal cocker spaniel companion Bootsie. Buddy's life was characterized by love for his family, friends, and nature; enthusiasm for a wide range of interests including forest conservation, public health service, the outdoors, his Borough Farm, and sailing the "Bear Necessity." His friendships included many lifelong friends from his Chadbourn youth and many treasured friends he met through life. He was educated at the Darlington School and graduated from Chadbourn Senior High School in 1958. He attended Campbell Junior College and graduated from North Carolina State University with degrees in Forest Management and Agronomy. After completing college, he served in the United States Coast Guard and as a member of the Presidential Honor Guard. Buddy began his 40 year career in forestry with the North Carolina Forest Service as the Lincoln County Ranger. He was a management forester with Riegel Paper Cooperation Woodlands Division and later Federal Paper Board, Inc. He became a Consulting Forester and real estate broker in 1973 until present as Charles L. Tate, Jr. & Associates. During his life he served in various capacities within his community including a commissioner of the Town of Lake Waccamaw, past chairman and vice-chairman of the Columbus County Board of Health, past president and vice-president of the Coastal Area Health Education Center (now SEAHEC), trustee at Meredith College, trustee emeritus and past treasurer of The Holden Beach Chapel, and past treasurer and honorary member of The North State Game Club. Professionally Buddy was a career member of Association of Consulting Foresters, Society of American Foresters, and the Forest Landowners Association. He recently completed an appointment on the North Carolina Board of Registered Foresters. He was a long time member of Lake Waccamaw United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends following a memorial service at The Holden Beach Chapel on Monday, November 7, 2011, at 11:00 a.m. with Dr. John Gray and Rev. Judi J. Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery, Lake Waccamaw at 3:30 p.m. The family is grateful for the many blessings of friendship that were so important to Buddy through his life. In lieu of flowers, a memorial to the Lower Cape Fear Hospice Brunswick County Life Center Building Fund, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, N. C. 28450 or The Holden Beach Chapel, Inc. Building Fund, 107 Rothschild Avenue, Holden Beach, N. C. 28462, is suggested.
