Arthur Kent Obituary

Published by Claire Brothers Funeral Home - Houston from Sep. 12 to Sep. 13, 2018.
Arthur Kent Jr. (Art Kent) passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at home in Houston, TX. Kent was born in New York City on Feb. 11, 1933, to Arthur Louis Capurro and Julia Ruether Capurro. Five years later, Arthur's father changed the family name to Kent, the year before he won the national competition, Metropolitan Opera Auditions of the Air, and became a featured baritone with the N.Y. Metropolitan Opera. Art's uncle, Alfred, changed his name from Capurro to Drake. Alfred Drake became a five-time Tony Award-winning Broadway leading man starring in Oklahoma!; Kiss Me, Kate; Kismet and others. Kent attended Williams College and enlisted in Army Intelligence in 1952. After completing the Chinese-Mandarin course at the Army Language School, he served in Korea, Japan, Okinawa and Formosa. He returned to the United States in 1955 and joined the Salt Lake City Police Department while he simultaneously began his career in broadcast journalism. News, reported with integrity, became a way of life for him. By 1963, Kent was news director of the NBC affiliate, KUTV, in Salt Lake City. After a stint as an NBC News correspondent in Vietnam in 1970, he returned to Salt Lake City and became news director of KSL-AM/FM/TV and later news director of KCPX-TV. In 1975, he moved to Pittsburgh as news director of NBC affiliate WIIC-TV, then chief of the NBC Pittsburgh News Bureau. Over the next two years, he produced NBC News coverage of Three Mile Island, served as a correspondent in Nicaragua and produced President Carter's state trip to Japan and Korea. In 1979, Kent was named executive producer of NBC News' Iowa Caucuses. Following that assignment, he was NBC News' Middle East correspondent, where he covered, among other things, the assassination of Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and the 1982 Israeli incursion into Lebanon. Kent returned to NYC where he became vice president of NBC News Service and NBC News Operations and Satellites. He returned to reporting in 1986 as NBC News National Security correspondent in Washington, D.C., and was the first television news correspondent to report on Oliver North's involvement in arms sales to Nicaragua. Kent retired from NBC in 1988 and moved to Houston as vice president for corporate communications for Continental Airlines. When he served on the board of Theatre Under the Stars, and later when he was named senior director of public affairs for the Houston Symphony, he felt he had come home to music. In 2010, he served as head of public relations for the Senior Games (Olympics) in Houston. Art often said his greatest personal happiness came in the last third of his life when he met and married Christina, a TODAY Show producer. Together, they welcomed Olivia and watched her become a beautiful young woman, celebrating her nursing career and, most recently, her marriage to Michael Moore of Nashville, TN. Chris and Olivia were Art's joy. Art Kent was an irreverent New Yorker, a very quick study and an incredibly smart man who never left his "cop" roots or his musical background. People who had the good fortune to work with him appreciated the wisdom he shared, each lesson gently and respectfully taught. He enjoyed a strong cup of coffee, menthol cigarettes, a good Manhattan and the company of tall, beautiful women. He became a journalist because he believed that reporters told the truth. Fake News comes from those who make the news, not from those who report it. Art fought a brave and valiant battle against C.I.D.P., an autoimmune disease that attacks the nervous system and brings about neuropathy and weakness. He elected to receive Hospice over further treatment and was cared for by his loving wife and daughter with the Houston Hospice Org. Team in his home. Kent is survived by his beloved wife of 29 years, Christina Johnson Kent of Ridgefield, CT and Houston, TX and their daughter, Olivia Kent Moore of Nashville, TN. He is also survived by his sister, Nancy Kent Eliot of Germantown, NY; two daughters of his first marriage, Julia Arlene Mays and Kelly Kathleen Kent of Salt Lake City, UT; his grandson Alexander Mays and his son, Arthur R. Kent of Denver, CO. A memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, (11140 Greenbay St., Houston, TX 77024) on Saturday, September 15th, 2018 at 11:00 A.M. A reception will follow in the Parlor Room. Contributions to the flowers at the Service may be arranged through Memorial City Florist (www.mcflorist.com ; 713-461-1138). If you would prefer to donate to a charity, please consider the Houston Symphony Society or Houston Hospice Organization. Arrangements have been entrusted to Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcroft Street, Houston, Texas.

Please accept my sincere condolences. I too remember Art from the River Oaks Grill days and remember his larger than life smile and very kind personality. My father Stan truly admired Art and enjoyed being in his company. May he Rest In Peace and all of your family have the comfort of treasured memories.

Christina and Olivia, I just learned of Arts passing and am very sorry for your loss. I have many fond memories of Art and Christina from the River Oaks Grill days both Art and Christina were very good friends.

I remember when Art announced he was going to be a dad to Olivia he said Sal can you believe it at my age with his larger than life personality and Christina at his side I said why not Art you can do anything! He ordered his drink lit a cigarette and had a big smile on his face as he awaited Christina to arrive....

Im sure Art and my dad Stan are in heaven giving God himself a challenge.

Thoughts and prayers are with you and the entire family.
