Julie Lynnette Gillen

Gillen, Julie Lynnette of Manchester, formerly of Ann Arbor and Chelsea Age 67, died Thursday, November 10, 2016 at Legacy Assisted Living in Jackson. She was born November 3, 1949 in Ann Arbor, the daughter of Charles and Margret Louise (Harley) Shankland. Julie graduated from Pioneer High School. She worked at Michigan Orthopedics as an X-ray tech and medical assistant, and later worked at Chelsea Community Hospital. Julie was a member at Emanuel Church of Christ in Manchester. She enjoyed water aerobics at the Chelsea Wellness Center, walking around Manchester, traveling, and basket making. Julie was a preceptor for Gamma Delta, a chapter of Beta Sigma Phi. She was a great mom, and enjoyed helping her kids with their activities, including Brownies, 4-H, and the Equestrian Team. Survivors include her mother and step-father, Margret and Francis Heckaman; two daughters, Amy (Mike) Riske of Manchester, Robyn (Jeff Robinson) Gillen of Chelsea; three brothers, Tom (Terri) Shankland of Grass Lake, Christopher Shankland of Saline, Marty Shankand of Mt. Clemens; a step-sister, Bonnie Hertler of Manchester; three grandchildren, Jason Riske, Jordan Riske, Emily Robinson; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Charles Shankland, and brother, Bradley Shankland. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 17, 5 PM at Emanuel United Church of Christ in Manchester, with Revs Dr. David A. Williams officiating. The family will greet friends from 4-5 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association or Emanuel United Church of Christ.
