Morris Covin Obituary

Published by Claire Brothers Funeral Home - Houston from Feb. 15 to Feb. 16, 2018.
Morris Dale Covin, Age 61, of Seabrook, Texas went to be with Jesus on February 13, 2018 after complications from the flu and pneumonia. Morris was born February 19, 1956 at Memorial Hospital in Houston, Texas to Bonnie Morris Covin and Sharon Dale Covin (Koehne). After graduating from LaPorte High School, Morris worked as a Chemical Operator at Lubrizol in LaPorte, Texas. He was married shortly after and in 1977 welcomed his only child, Jennifer. In 1979 he decided to follow his passion and become a police officer. Morris thrived as a police officer and held numerous positions. He patrolled the streets of Harris County, served as one of the original Motorist Assistance Program (M.A.P.) officers, assumed numerous shifts in some of the county jails and extra jobs on the side to help provide financially for his family. He proudly served the department until he retired as a Lieutenant in 2009. Morris was a true leader. Those who have served under his leadership, claim he was one of the best Lieutenants they ever had. He had a huge heart, full of compassion and always went the extra mile for others. Morris had many hobbies throughout his life such as surfing, photography, motorcycles, dirt-bikes, guitars, dancing, fishing, as well as numerous outdoor activities. He even worked hard to earn a private pilot’s license and took many flights in his parent’s Mooney airplane. In his later years, he began to enjoy additional outdoor activities of sailing and snow skiing. Once he set his stubborn mind to something, he went all out to master all his hobbies and interests. In recent years he has been a part of the Space City Ski Club and enjoyed countless ski trips to some of the best mountains in America. Additionally, he has enjoyed sailing his Catamaran off the Texas City Dike for many years. These activities blessed Morris with numerous friends and acquaintances over the years. After retiring from the County, Morris did a bit of traveling in his motorhome. A few short years later he was diagnosed with Melanoma. This battle took its toll on him, especially once it had spread to his lungs. Fortunately, he received successful treatment with Immunotherapy a couple of years ago. After this time, Morris really picked up where he left off with his retirement; traveling extensively with his ski club to various mountains, enjoying dirt bike trips with his brothers, dusting off his fishing boat and successfully pulling in plenty of fish from Galveston Bay as well as many other trips along the way. Morris was preceded in death by his Grandparents; father, Bonnie Morris Covin and step-father, William Koehne. He is survived by his mother, Sharon Koehne of Cat Springs, TX; step-mother, Judy Covin of Mabank, TX; daughter, Jennifer Wood and husband, Jason of Richmond Hill, GA; two sisters, Sherri Christensen of Cat Springs, TX, Jeannie Meyers and husband, Tim of Mabank, TX; two brothers, Perry Koehne and wife, Amy of Alamogordo, NM, Walter Koehne and wife, Donna of Georgetown, TX; his grandchildren, Payton and Nikelle Wood; numerous nieces and nephews, great-nephew and a host of many other relatives and friends. The family would like to thank Stacey Garnhum, for her continuous love & support during several years of doctor’s appointments & cancer treatments during Morris’s Melanoma journey. Knowing she was by his side over the years brought his family living in other cities and states comfort. His family takes comfort in knowing he was saved and accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and is now in the presence of Jesus. We know he is watching over us with his dad, Morris, his step father Bill, and his other beloved family members. The family will receive Friends from 5 pm until 7 pm Friday, February 16, 2018 and a Celebration of Life event will be held 10 am, Saturday, February, 17, 2018. The visitation and the service will be held at First United Methodist Church-LaPorte, 9601 W. Fairmont Parkway. Interment will follow in Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to First United Methodist Church, 9601 W. Fairmont Parkway, LaPorte, TX 77571 or MD MD Anderson Melanoma Center Funeral Arrangements under the direction of Claire Brothers Funeral Home, 7901 Hillcroft St., Houston, TX.
