Jeanette Rice Obituary

Published by Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home - Mechanicsville from Jan. 12 to Jan. 13, 2022.
“Her Life is a Beautiful Memory; Her Absence a Silent Grief She is Asleep in God’s Beautiful Garden; Of Sunshine and Perfect Peace. She Left a Beautiful Memory; A Sorrow too Great to be Told But to us who Loved and Lost Her; Her Memory Will Never Grow Old.”

Jeanette Rice made her transition on January 4, 2022 at the age of 86 years. She was born on August 2, 1935 to the late William and Mary (Shorter) Rice in St. Mary’s City, MD. She was one of seven siblings.

Jeanette accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a lifelong member of Zion United Methodist Church, Lexington Park, Maryland, where she served on the usher board. She received her education through the St. Mary’s County Public School System.

Her employment history included The Belvedere Motor Inn, Patuxent River Naval Air Station Galley 5, P&P Brothers, and her final employment into retirement was with the St. Mary’s County Board of Education.

Jeanette, affectionately known to many as Ms. Chancellor, Rice, Jenny, Granny, and Grandma, was feisty and a die-hard Washington Redskins fan. She loved those Redskins, even when her eyesight was at its worst, she never missed a televised game. Jenny was a fun-loving woman who never met a stranger. She developed relationships that lasted a lifetime and was loved by everyone she came in contact with. She truly exemplified the true meaning of friendship. Jeanette never repeated things shared with her, not even with her children. She was a warm soul who spread love, knowledge, and honesty. Her blessings to others were always behind-the-scene, and she never boasted about what she did for others.

Jeanette loved her family! She was a single parent who raised strong-willed and independent children, who adored her and spoiled her rotten. She loved her children and grandchildren with all her heart and was proud of each and every one of them. She had a very humble spirit and it showed. Not having much herself, Jeanette took into her home countless number of teenage children no matter what their race or background was. She allowed them to live in her home and counted them as her own. She once moved-in an entire family of six into her three-bedroom apartment, even though she had five of her own children still living at home. During her later years at the senior facility where she lived, it was nothing to be visiting with her and someone would knock on the door to return a plate from which she had prepared a meal for them. Even amid her last days here on earth Jeanette continued to help others.

She loved gospel music, BINGO, playing cards, lottery, and dancing. When she danced, she would bare a smile that would light up the room. Her love of fashion during her younger years won her numerous prizes to include Best-Dressed Motorcycle Wear Champion. Let us not forget to mention that she was a mean pool player as well. She loved cooking her polished meals which were enjoyed by many. She cooked smothered pork chops, fried fish, fried potatoes and onions, and her famous potato salad like no other.

Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, William and Mary Rice; sisters, Sarah Jackson and Marnette Chase; brothers, Rev. Calvin Wilkerson and Leon Rice, and son, Andre Rice.

She is survived by her children, Cynthia Davis (Mark), Virginia Beach, VA, Betty Scott, Waldorf, MD, Terry Barnes (Blanca), Richmond, VA, Gail Holmes (Malcolm), Great Mills, MD, Gary Rice (Chanell), California, MD, and Kimberly Scriber (William) Lexington Park, MD; sisters, Mary Wesley, Seattle, WA and Barbara Jenkins, Kent, WA; sister-n-law, Sylvia Thomas, West Palm Beach, FL; grandchildren, Laquita Cuff, Covington, GA, Tameka Mbaekwe (Chigbo), Middlesex, NJ, Ebonee Smith, Brooklyn, NY, Larry Rice Jr., Scotland, MD, Anthony Rice, Seattle, WA, Caitlin Rice, Waldorf, MD, Zymere Somerville and ZaNiya Rice, California, MD, Candace Melendez (Victor), St. Inigoes, MD, Adrian Scriber, Annadale, VA, and Christopher Scriber, Laurel, MD. She also leaves to mourn nine great-grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren; Caretaker, Amy Hebb, Carrie (Puddin) Remied, and two of the original OG’s, special friends, Dorothy (Stout) Clark, and Margaret (Cissy) Pittman, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Family and friends will unite on Monday, January 17, 2022 for visitation at 9 am until time of service at 11 am at Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home, 38576 Brett Way, Mechanicsville, MD. Interment will be private.

I wish I could be there to honor Jeanette along with you. I was blessed to know her and grow up with the family. She was a Joy to be around. I will never forget, whenever she walked in a room her smile arrived first, no matter what she always kept a smile on her face. Her legs arrived second, because she was always ready to dance. And last but not least, her spirit because she was loved by so many. You truly will be missed.

Lifting the Rice Family up in love and prayers, My fondest memories of Ms. Jeanette and Mary Miles (Mattie) when they both were working for P&P Brothers, they both had such a good time together laughing, joking with each other but always looked out for one another.
