Frances Herbert Obituary

Published by Briscoe-Tonic Funeral Home - Mechanicsville from Apr. 8 to Apr. 9, 2022.
Frances Louise Stewart Herbert of Oakville, Maryland, peacefully departed this life on her birthday, April 4, 2022 in her home in King and Kennedy Estates surrounded by her family. She was born on April 4, l938 to the late Kathleen Stewart Young and the late John Bernard Butler. She was raised by Kathleen and James "Billy" Young, Sr. in Morganza, Maryland. She married Charles Joseph Herbert, Sr. and from this union eight children were born.

Frances, affectionately known as "Tinsy", received her formative education in the St. Mary's County School System. During her life, she wore many hats and had numerous jobs. Not only was she a bus driver for the St. Mary's County Schools for over twenty years, she was a cook, at various times, for St. Mary's Academy, Abell's Diner, Dukes Restaurant and the Ye Olde Ice Cream Parlor, an attendant at Leonardtown Laundry, a housekeeper for Our Lady of the Wayside and St. Joseph's Church rectories, a caregiver for several local families, and finally a food service monitor at Oakville Elementary School.

Tinsy had many social and volunteer commitments. She was a forty-seven years member of the Try Me Social Club, as well as, a member of the St. Joseph Community Center. At one point, she served as vice-president of the Community Center. She was instrumental in fundraising efforts, sponsoring bus trips, preparing and selling dinners, planning Easter egg hunts and Halloween parties, and watching children during Christmas toy giveaways.

All work and no play was never in Tinsy's vocabulary. She was a very social person with boundless energy who loved to have fun. It was not unusual for the family to call each other asking, "Do you know where your mother is?" She loved to go on casino trips, play Pokeno, and talk on the phone. She played on the Morganza Hustlers softball team and developed strong friendships with her teammates and the other teams. She also enjoyed going to the Sunday baseball games. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, without fail, she would be at the soup kitchen or McDonald's shooting the breeze with her friends. Going out to dinner at the Golden Corral or Phillip's Seafood with family was one of her favorite things to do so she could eat well but pay nothing. After visits with our mom, we would say, "Okay momma, see you later!" or "I'll be back!" Her favorite reply was, "I ain't going nowhere!"

Tinsy was a force to be reckoned with . . . direct, honest and straightforward. If you didn't want the truth, she was not the one to ask. However, she was just as loving and friendly and cultivated many special relationships. She will sorely be missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Kathleen and James Young Sr, and John Butler; two sons, William and Michael Herbert; one grandson, Lydell Herbert; four siblings, James "Josh" Stewart, Mary "Pete" Holly, MaryRose Young, and James "Boonie" Young Jr.; and two sisters-in-law LaVerne Stewart and Agnes Young.

Left to cherish her memories are seven children, Paul (Lestremayne) Stewart, Charles (Nellie) Herbert Jr., Cynthia (John) Swann, Linda (Robert) Baker, Theresa (Steven) Faison, Bernadette Herbert, and Jobina "Pebbles" Butler; two grandchildren raised from birth, Rokita (Levon) Smith and Antoine Herbert; one sister, Jane Catherine Taylor; one brother-in-law, Joe Holly; a special nephew, Jimmy Stewart, nine grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, eight godchildren, a special friend that called her every day, Missy Holt, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
