SAM SCHACHT Obituary

SCHACHT--Sam, 86, of New York City, passed away on Thursday, January 5th, after a brief illness. Born in New York City to Max and Tobey Schacht, he was a lifelong resident of the City. Sam graduated from CCNY. Some years later, Sam became a member of The Actor's Studio, where he studied with Lee Strasburg. Sam was fortunate to have three careers that were profoundly meaningful to him - he was an actor, acting teacher, and psychoanalyst. Sam enjoyed decades of acting on stage, screen, and television and was later pleased to be a teacher of acting. He taught both privately and at The Actors Studio Drama School where he previously served as Dean. Most recently, he was a Master Teacher at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. Sam also co-founded two thriving theater companies in New York: The New Group and The Workshop. In later years, Sam returned to school and received a Master's degree in Psychoanalytic Studies through the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies where he also served on the Board of Directors. Sam loved life. He was endlessly curious, a constant reader and a student of the arts, history and culture. Sam is survived by his most beloved wife of sixty years, Sybil Schacht. He was also the proud and loving father of Alexei Schacht and Daniel Schacht. He loved his four grandchildren: Oliver, Owen, Avery and Leo and his daughters-in-law, Jamie Nagler and BethAnn Schacht. Sam was my acting coach in the 1980s and had a profound effect on my creative life as he did for so many others. His wisdom, humor, talent and genius were a gift to all who knew him. Love and blessings to Sybil and the family.

Sam was the best teacher I ever had. I hated to read, he got me interested in reading . He also taught me how to deal with negative things that had happened to me, by putting them into acting roles. He was a true mentor to me. I will always cherish those memories of Sam and his great students. My condolences to his beautiful family.

Sam was my therapist for many years. I will miss him tremendously. My heart goes out to Sybil Alexei and Daniel. "He was a man, take him for all in all, I shall not look upon his like again." Thank you Sam-for everything! Richard
