Ezekiel Heter-Wegscheider Obituary

Ezekiel Coyote Heter-Wegscheider

Buckland, MA - Ezekiel Coyote Heter-Wegscheider was born October 21, 1993, in Topeka, Kansas, to Jane Beatrice Wegscheider and Steve Heter. He was a magical and expressive child, overflowing with curiosity and creativity. His early years were spent under big skies, near tallgrass prairie, and in the artistic and progressive community of Lawrence, KS. He moved east with his mother in 2000, and grew up with her among a strong community of friends in the hills of western Massachusetts. He attended schools in Heath, Charlemont and Greenfield. He also attended wilderness programs and tried homeschooling. He got his GED at 17.

Ezekiel had a keen intelligence, a strong social conscience and a passion for freedom. Like his parents, he was an artist and a maker. He drew, he played music on his body, he wrote poems and delighted in the outdoor world. He made surprising creations from ephemera: bits and pieces of found paper and objects combined with jewels, "trash" and natural materials, often giving them away as gifts. He gave a TEDx talk in Shelburne Falls in 2012 entitled "Infinite Everything" in which he explored the world of fractals and drew implications for how each of us might confront our own limitations. He wanted to live without compromises and for the last 10 years of his life, he was faithful to that intention, even while increasingly encumbered by addiction. Those who spent time with Zeek knew that his sweet smile, generous spirit and wisdom lived equally with his anger and confusion. He was a bright light who knew darkness.

Ezekiel was a seeker. He was interested in shamanism. He meditated and sought enlightenment. He began using drugs as a way to expand his consciousness and later as a way to self-medicate and cope with his pain. He did not believe in any sort of hierarchy and decided early on to live outside the strictures of society. He identified as a traveler: someone who roamed the country with few possessions, no money and a readiness to befriend other travelers. He found people like himself everywhere he went as he wandered from coast to coast, from New Mexico to Maine, and Connecticut to California. He rode bicycles, hitchhiked, caught trains, and walked. He was always moving. He longed for a world where no one was at the bottom, where equality was practiced and where sharing was the highest good. That was his ethic, whether it was food from a dumpster, or the T-shirt he'd just been given.

Ezekiel was suspicious of authority and all forms of pretense. He hated being looked down upon and he made a point of looking out for others who were treated as second class citizens. He sometimes identified as having a mental illness. He wrestled with the stigma and rejected being labeled. He had relationships with wonderers and healers, and with his and his mother's many friends, spread out across the country. His traveler network was extensive. His friends speak of him as caring, committed and courageous. He never chose to settle down.

Ezekiel died on December 10, 2022. He was 29 years old. He embodied the struggle faced by many who do not have an obvious place in our society, those at the edges, those who choose a different way or find it imposed upon them. Ezekiel extended a welcome to so many who needed one. We who love him, trust that he has found welcome himself. There will be a service to celebrate his life on April 15th, at the Charlemont Federated Church at 2 p.m.

Sorry to hear of zeeks passing. I first met him in downtown Eugene in 2017, and then saw him in NYC months later. Then I ran into him in Portland, Maine a few months after that. We were crossing paths pretty regularly for a few years, running in to each other on a pretty regular basis. Zeek will be remembered forever.

Zeke and I connected when he was in high school and did some yard work for me. He biked from Shelburne Falls to my home in Greenfield, always refusing a ride saying he enjoyed being on the bike. When I set him up with instructions how to weed my garden- take out the big patches of weeds that contained witch grads and masses of violets - he said to me it was hard to pluck them out because they too were living beings and weren´t ready to give up their lives. I told him he was quite a philosopher and that I had majored in philosophy in college so we ended up with me sitting on the front steps and Zeke sending love to each living being he pulled out from the soil and talking about life and death, the universal and the particular, Being and non-Being. He was a mystic and a mis-fit and so am I so we shared our quirky humanity with each other with mutual respect and pleasure. I will always hold him as a sweet blessing in my life. What a beautiful soul he had!

Jane, Sending you a big hug of condolences. It is difficult to check our own hopes and desires for those we watch make their way in the world, with those of the person choosing their own way. Your tribute was touching, and reminded me of the seeker, the searcher, the traveler within me...and of the many times in our lives where we may simply be searching for that place of true belonging. My thoughts go out to you, and to Zeke.

Ezekiel was the best . We traveled with one another for summer and had an extremely passionate friendship. I was one of the few who saw his space . Iridescence and light to his darkness and torment . He was disturbed by life . And always always did the right thing . To the easy folk . Thanks Jane for brining him to himself as many times as he needed . I aspire to be a ma like ju .

What left me speechless was how he never wanted to kiss .
We made so much undiscovered and walked on beaches . Slept in rain , sun , and frigid cold . I have always thought if zeeky e,ekiel and tim would let their freedoms leave I wouldn't die either .

We are profoundly sad to hear of Zeek´s passing.
Our son, David, was a fellow traveler who picked Zeek up in California in Spring 2015. Zeek traveled with David and another girl for several weeks through Joshua Tree, to Taos where Zeek wanted to attend a Gathering, and then on to Dallas TX where David brought Zeek to a meditation retreat.
We heard many stories about Zeek, including how he kept filling the car with sticks and other things to make art with.
David bought Zeek meals and snacks.
Zeek was extremely intelligent and creative and fascinating, but indeed struggled with life and rules and fitting in. We worried about him a lot as we heard from David.
David happened upon Zeek several years later on the streets of Cambridge and took him for a meal.
Zeek was a brilliant candle that shined brightly for far too short a time. I´m glad David was able to help him out along the way. We will always remember Zeek.

Yours was the most beautiful, honest, and heartbreaking tribute I have ever read for a son. Thank you for sharing him with us like this. I watched his TEDx talk and just love his smile!
Sending heartfelt thoughts from Oregon.

like stephanie, i did not know Zeek...i found his obituary profound, a magical person at such a young age...there are so many of us who feel we are not part of the majority that follow the rules and dresses accordingly....i am deeply sorry for your loss...seems as if he has left a lot of himself in this earthly place...

Such a beautiful tribute to one who sounds like such a positively lovely young man. I did not know him, but I wish I had. My heart hurts for what surely we all have lost in his passing. My wish is for peace to all mourn the loss of such a gem in your lives.
