Frederick Layton Obituary

Frederick "Fred" C. Layton, 83, of Troy, passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at Lincoln County Nursing and Rehab in Troy.
He was born on Sept. 7, 1934, in Bismarck, to Joseph W. and Rachel E. (Ashby) Layton. Fred grew up with his seven siblings and knew what it meant to think of others instead of yourself. He knew his future wife, Mary Ruth Cockman, from elementary school and many years later they were married on Aug. 25, 1956. Fred served in the U.S. Army from 1953 until 1956 during the Korean Conflict. After his honorable discharge from service, Fred and Mary moved to St. Louis. He began working for the McDonnell-Douglas Corp. and at the same time attending Washington University. The couple moved to Troy in 1993 and became very active in the Troy First Baptist Church. He served as a deacon and on many committees within the church. He was a charter member of the Optimist Club of Lincoln County, was a NECAC board member, helped with the Troy Food Pantry, was involved with the Lincoln County Republican Party and served as a committeeman for Bedford Township. Up until time of his death, he was a legislative delegate representing Lincoln County Central Committee for U.S. Congress. He was a substitute teacher for Lincoln County R-III School and also drove a bus for the school district. Fred also was an ASA umpire for men's softball league in many areas and in years past when the kids were young, he coached their Khoury Leagues. Being a member of VFW Post No. 8828, past member of American Legion and attending the Honor Flight was very important to him.
Surviving are his three devoted children Kim (Len) House of St. Charles, Kevin (Vicki) Layton of Midlothian, VA, Kerry (Laura) Layton of O'Fallon, and Fred's sister, Margaret Henderson of Farmington. He is further survived by his 10 grandchildren: Carlie, Cara, Christopher (Emilie) Chelsea, Adam (Stephanie) Kelli (Nick) Joseph, Anna, Isaac (Austin) Alex and his adoring six great-grandchildren: William, Samuel, Audrey, Camden, Graham and McKenna; other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Mary Layton, his great-grandson, Paxton and six siblings.
Visitation was held from 5-6 p.m. on Sunday, May 6, 2018 at the Troy First Baptist Church, 1000 Elmtree Road, Troy. A memorial service was held that evening. Rev. Richie Rhea officiated.
