Newark, OH—Erna Hassebrock, 88, formerly of Mt. Pulaski, passed away on Monday, April 30, in Newark, Ohio. Erna was born on March 5, 1930 and was the daughter of John and Bertha Geyer. She married Loren Hassebrock of Mt. Pulaski on June 27, 1952. He preceded her in death on January 18, 1986.
Erna is survived by her son, Frank Hassebrock, and daughter-in-law, Meg Grossman, of Granville, Ohio. She was also preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Cheri Mitchell.
Erna graduated from Mt. Pulaski High School, Millikin College (Bachelor's degree in Physical Education), and the University of Illinois (Master's degree in Library Science). Erna taught girls' physical education at Mt. Pulaski Grade School and Junior High, and was a librarian at Tri-City and Illiopolis High Schools. Following Erna and Loren's move to the Hot Springs, Arkansas area in 1977, she worked as a librarian for the Montgomery County Library in Mt. Ida and for the Tri-Lakes Regional Library in Hot Springs, retiring in 2000.
Erna was an avid gardener, birder, and conservationist; a Dixieland jazz aficionado; an adventuresome cook and enthusiastic dinner party host; and a voracious reader.
