About North Carolina
North Carolina is called the “Tar Heel State” though the origin of the nickname is not clear. Some say it has to do with tar being one of the state’s early exports or it may be a name used for soldiers from the state during the Civil War. North Carolina features a wide variety of geography, from the Atlantic Ocean beaches in the east to the mountains in the west. Mount Mitchell in western North Carolina is the highest point in North America east of the Mississippi River. This geography allows for great outdoor recreation activities from swimming at the beach to skiing and hiking in the mountains. Tourists flock to scenic Asheville which features art galleries, theaters, live music and great breweries. College basketball is popular in the state which features the legendary rivalry between Duke University and the University of North Carolina. Many famous musicians are from the state including John Coltrane, Nina Simone, Randy Travis and Ben Folds.
