ROBERT "BOB" C. ROMANS

1935 - 2025

Robert "Bob" Romans tipped over at home in Lodi, California, on September 18, 2025, at the age of 93, surrounded by his loving family.
Born February 26, 1932, in Erlanger, Kentucky, to Carl and Lida Romans, Bob grew up in Colorado and graduated from Campion Academy in 1950. He served two years in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict before completing a degree in music education at Southern Missionary College (now Southern Adventist University).
Bob taught music in Adventist schools and later in the Lodi public schools from 1968 until his retirement in 1995, inspiring generations of students. A talented cornet, trumpet, and euphonium player, he founded the Cell Block 7 Jazz Band in 1982. Under his leadership, the group became a fixture at jazz festivals across the West Coast and toured internationally, performing in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. They produced seven recordings and were a popular feature at the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee, where they were rated among the top groups for many years.
Dedicated to mentoring young musicians, Bob also founded and coached several youth jazz ensembles, including the Hot 'N' Tots, The Alley Cats, The Barkin' Dawg Jazz Band, and the Alligator Stomperz. These groups performed across the U.S. and Canada, continuing his mission of sharing jazz with new generations.
Bob is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Carole; children Mark (Valerie), Beth (Toby), and Matt (Helena); stepdaughters Christine and Tara; five grandchildren; and siblings Marjorie, Kathy, and Kenny. He was preceded in death by his brother Jim and both parents.
Bob's love of music and devotion to teaching will be remembered by all who knew him.
